I was just thinking how much the Starla looks like the Ovation Viper.Nick wrote:PROTIP:
You can buy an ugly overengineered American made electric guitar that is every bit as nice a player for under $600 all day long. PRS is basically the modern day equivalent to the Ovation electric guitarws of the 70s.

When I worked at Guitar Center I had a customer show me a custom Deacon copy he made. It was surprisingly comfortable. I'd probably buy one if I came across one at a good price. That body shape it seems held the value up over their other electric models, as the same features are found on the preacher and the latter can usually be had for half the price.

Count me in, these things are so fucking rad, especially the unnecessarily large and complicated neck pickup. Those 4 holes at the bottom are actually volume trimpots for the polepieces!Nick wrote:I do however really want a Magnum
I actually really like the body shape too, it's like a way more tame version of the Breadwinner.

I didn't know that about the neck pickups, but that's pretty amazing. Also I'm very interested in the bridge pickup-supposedly the "U" shaped pole pieces are supposed to create a better magnetic field with more surface area around the string. That's one of the things I love about Ovations- the fact parts like necks, pickups, bridges, are all made specifically for the guitar and aren't meant to be changed out.
I know that being mod-friendly is now unfortunately a selling point when it comes to gear these days, but the genericness of standardized hardware and pickup shapes makes even the nicer things feel like copies to me.
