I've always thought of the idea of having a separate pickup for the lower strings on a guitar and a separate output to send to a bass amp, and whatnot. It seems like a nifty idea to fill things out a bit in a band with only a guitarist or something like that.

you can do exactly the same thing with a splitter and a boss OC-3 on poly mode and set to pick up the bottom two strings, fed through a bass amp. i know this, because it's my setup, and i've done dozens of gigs with it.
BUT IT ISN'T A BASS PLAYER!!
no shit, but it fills the frequency range and if you're playing simple music it doesn't matter if you have a bassist or not.
also just get a drum machine instead of a drummer -- drums are so awkward and annoying to move around!

thought you might be interested in this 3 piece (guitar player, drummer, singer) the guitarist covers the bass part and guitar parts. Don't know if these videos really showcase this, but I saw them live last year and it was fucking impressive!

Re. the P-bass pickup, a better thing to do might be to use single coils with separate windings for the bass and treble side. Then you can split it, boost the bass side or whatevs.
Re. the two jacks, I've seen people poast pics of that guy's gear before, and always ask: why not just use a stereo jack? So... why not just use a stereo jack?

Nah.. But really. I rather the ability of using every day guitar cables instead of getting the cables with two pins which are more expensive and you have to order them. I can't find them around me.

John Reis' take on the stereo setup:
"I had 2 output jacks. One for each pick up. That way they work independently. In the past I would use a stereo chord into a stereo jack. No good. there was always bleed from one pickup into another. this caused weird phasing stuff that was counter productive to what I was hoping to achieve. so the 2 seperate jacks simplified things for the cromagnon mind and sounded better. I used this guitar alot in RFTC as well. I just used it with either a different pick up’s (man, I tried just about everything) and without the 2 seperate jacks."
Love Local H and think this is a great setup...wonder why nobody makes these stock

nothing that really captures the sound accurately at the moment, although we're working on it.
a lot of the end result depends on your playing style. if you're fucking around with blues solos and stupid shit then obviously it won't sound good. doog uses a similar setup and nobody sane could accuse casa bonita of lacking in bottom end live.

^ That setup really surprised me when I heard you guys play live. Loads of bottom end and it tracked well enough that I couldn't actually work out what the hell was going on at first.
Like you say having a style of playing that's in sync/sympathetic with the gear you're using is key.

having seen local h live at least a dozen times, i must say he pulls this bass in the guitar off quite well.
But he runs one hell of an amp/pedal setup to do it.
