So what makes the spectrum special?

Just the rarity?

Can you clarify what this means?

I've honestly been wanting to hear what a "MIJ DS1" sounds like, I have a hard time believing it sounds all that different from the newer ones.
Long dash means that the D of "DS-1" is directly under the "t" of "Distortion" because the spaces around the dash are longer. They do sound different than the new ones, but the same as the early manufacture Taiwan ones with the black label on the bottom. They changed the IC they used due to supply issues in 1994 I think and completely redesigned the pedal around a different one. The good ones have the 7 pin single opamp, the newer ones use an 8 pin Dual opamp.
Right, I'm familiar with the circuit in the DS-1, and the change in opamp, what I mean is that I have tried to find youtube clips comparing the two and don't really hear any difference between the two. I used to think getting an old DS-1 would be cool, but when I have checked out sound clips I don't notice anything special about them.

I blame sound quality of youtube clips and/or computer speakers. The new ones just sound fizzier in a bad way, less definition overall.

I don't understand any of the love for old DS-1s, at best it's just a slightly less terrible sounding version of a terrible sounding pedal. There are so many awesome sounding dirt pedals available now that there is no reasonable excuse for using a DS-1.

I can respect this opinion, however it is a good option when you don't want to sound like everyone else who is using a Rat pedal. It worked for the kurdtz, and I love how mine sounds.
