I like going on first... I have a tendancy to be an early bird as far as showing up and the earlier we play the better....... before 1 too may shots of So Co.....
As far as recording goes, what I like is honesty and good songs/emotion. It may sound corny....But when you hear an indy band that you know recorded out of their garage it doesn't matter the qualtiy. You listen for the emotion and the song quality... But when you hear a wildy succesful band obviously just going out of their way to be too "indy" it is almost the opposit of "SELL OUT"
It is all dependant on the song, or the album's direction.. Sometimes I like th slick pop recordings if I don't feel that a band had been made up and forced on the public.... If it is good solid music, and tha badn has talent...Pop can be great.... (hence the term POP for popular) On the other hand, sometimes a stipped down and raw album can really just dig into you and get you moving, even when you know on a song by song basis, things could have been recorded "better/tighter"
I guess as more of a singer songwriter who happens to front a band, I look more to arrangements/recording practices that fulfill the song more than hi fi, lo fi, garage style, or fully produced.

They say great minds think alike....Sometimes we do too...
Is it very very expensive? We have a place like that (Alchemea, click for link). I know some people who went and they loved it. Clever goes too.aen wrote:The Institute of Produciton and Recordingbob wrote:whats IPR?

Shabba.
Being an MBV/Slowdive/Chapterhouse/Pale Saints fan, it should be no surprise that I like overdone layered stuff, but that also applies to what I like about some pop tunes that still sound fresh in my mind. When I can still hear something new after 4-5 listens my ears perk up and I start wondering how things stayed so hidden. It's not good for every tune in the world for sure, but some seem to retain complexity and wonder in my mind for that very reason.
Some that come to mind:
Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels
A-ha - The Soft Rains of April
Maxwell - Drowndeep:Hula
Prince - Raspberry Beret

I was under the impression naturally reverby studios were frowned upon, yes, but not enough to drop a nuke on them.iCEByTes wrote:Likes :

Depends on the studio and the size of it. Albini's Electrical Audio Studio have big 'verby live rooms of varying sizes, plus a dead room with no ambience.

It's neat, you can hear what a snare sounds like in each of the 3 'verby rooms.

I've had three very different sounding rooms to continuously record in over the past five years or so, the best of them being the 3.5m ceiling our lofted flat had when we first got married. No especially noticable reverberation per se, just a strange feeling of space that was great for "live" acoustic recordings(vox/guitar) when I wanted a single condensor job.
Whcih reminds me, I was in a nice room last Monday tracking some stringed goodies for an upcoming movie.
Medium ceiling...And great vibes. The studio is about a year old and is quite comfy:

I'm sure playing in a studio is great, but I would never play any Nirvana or Sex Pistols given that privilege. That's like, blasphemy.
