I like the look of these bound Japanese ones.

47429Y + 18000Y shipping I think
£317.53 + £120 shipping

You'd probably have to budget for around £100 import and duty. Dunno if it makes financial sense, but I like 'em.

This is a warmoth body but Strats with body binding and contours look incredibly classy.

I've never owned a US Standard Strat (had a Highway 1) but a bunch of the other stuff like MIM, MIJ and Korean, plus Squiers.

The best one for me was a MIJ 'Contemporary Strat' from the early 80's. They aren't desirable due to the painted neck/headstock and in some cases a fangled two point pivot locking trem, so you can still pick them up cheapish. Thing is, they were made in a period that Japanese manufacture was excellent.
Doog had the Contemporary Telecaster and i think Black Francis' main guitar was one in the early Pixies years.

They are not for the corksniffer or purist though. CV's seem to deliver that on a budget.

This is what I meant when I started crapping on about Roadhouse strats.

Yep, I liked the couple I played. Seems to me, the best bet with Strats is to play LOADS.

Haha, you haven't got the forearms to play a Highway 1 Tim.

I quite liked mine, large frets, flatter radius...

anyone else tried the american specials the Thomas mentions? They look ok price wise (cheap for an american guitar that is) and seem to get some good reviews. I might have to see if they have them in PMT tomorrow.

Am I the only one that bashes their pinky finger to fuck on the volume knob every time they play a Strat?

I usually gash my finger open and roll the volume off while I'm strumming, so don't get on with them.

ive done this on a telecaster but thats mainly due to the giant metal pylons used as knobs on traditional teles!

Ok looking at specs & knowing what I like athestically in a guitar might mean I need to gather parts to make my own as nothing seems to tick all the boxes.

I found myself in exactly the same situation Chris - keep an eye on eBay for loaded bodies, maybe consider an Allparts neck? What are your specs, anyhow?
