Probably the most discouraging thread ever. Sucks.
I always supposed, in spite of the almost asshole-ish (if slightly understandable) business practices surrounding copies and resales, that the instruments themselves justified it because they were super-awesome. Having played a few since I've realised that that isn't entirely the case. Some are great. Oddly, the models I'd say they're least famous for in my mind, which is the six-strings. I loved the John Lennon model that Forsyths had here in Manchester a while back. 22" scale, oversized knobs, teensy, tiny body, all mapple-coloured wood. It was sort of hideous and near unplayable but it felt like it was supposed to be, and I loved the little thing. Similarly, the Colorado models were fucking sweet, played one in blue and added up the entire value of my collection to figure out if I'd be able to buy it if I just hocked everything on eBay.
Then I played a few basses and a 12 string and they were gash and disappointing. Sort of "why the fuck do they still make guitars like this in 2012" (which I realise is slightly contradictory with the above account of the Lennon model, but fuck it).

This sucks George. Really hope you get this sorted, because those fucking Ricks are expensive even over here. My local long and mcquade gets the occasional Rickenbacker in stock and I've yet to try one that wasn't wonky in some regard. Shitty because they're beautiful and sound great. Weird necks though.

Agreed with this and others' comments, a dodgy seller passing on what you've been dreaming of for ages is a horrible way to get your feet face wet.
Now for my somewhat-related Ric 620 impressions: Although mostly due to customs regulations and bringing back too much junk on every trip (dried goods, cosmetics, sundries, etc) I've not felt compelled to bring my mid-80s 620/6 back here, it simply sitting in its case in San Gabriel for the past 4 years or so now. Aside from the expressed problems/idiosyncrasies George has expressed about the thing coming from the shop, even the non-12 string version is a very weird guitar to start with, especially for us coming from the Fender camp.
Not to say that I dislike it, but I have a feeling it will take some time for me to understand it once I do wrestle it into my setup in due time (as I had to do with my finally-familiar 360/12). Tiny but heavy maple body, funky neck shape, strings that soar high above the pickups and guitar as if they were gondola cables admiring a massive archtop's figured top, and hyper-sensitive stereo jack that cuts out the bridge pickup if you as so much look into the hole.

Sorry to hear this George. Must be awful when it's a guitar you've wanted for so long, and one that cost so much money.
Hope you get it sorted switftly and painlessly.

This.
Does his email listing say he accepts returns? Even if you bought it outside of ebay he should still take it back, if he doesn't say you'll report him to ebay for breach of ebay rules.

Irrespective of Ebay, if it came from a shop you are covered by the sale of goods act and distance selling regulations.

And strips the head of the screw too. Just embarrassing.

there was a fellow in a band with aen and i that had two ricks, one was a rick guitar, and one was a mando, both were amazing peices!
the guitar was semi hollow with binding on the backside, but not the top, amazing fretting, finish, everything was top notch. the mando was the same way. tho i thought the bridge could have been a bit nicer, he paid top dollar for both. those are really the only first person hands on experience i have ever had with ricks, besides a vintage bass here and there.

I had to look at a Rickenbacker bass recently which was making a really nasty klonk.... happened to be one of the saddles rocking and making metal to metal noise, once the string was released. I could have looked at it and sorted it, but it was days old. Told him to take it back to the shop he bought it from. It was nice overall though... Tried a few other rick guitars in my time.... one was exceptional and exciting to play, and the other a real dog.

Get a VOX 12 string. They sound great and are easier to play(wider fretboard than the Rick).
