It might not be the "official" one but it'll be just as good (and a whole load more available, crucially).

Depends whether your nine-year-old son would mind if it was one over the other I suppose.
Yes, thanks. A definite possibility if I can't find the KC one - but I did hear it wasn't as good i.e. pick ups / and made of inferior wood? By the way, are you the same Bacchus from The Doors forum of old?
Not that Bacchus I'm afraid.

The pickups are different but not necessarily worse.

The Kurt Cobain Mustang has a Seymour Duncan JB pickup in the bridge. This pickup is readily available both new and second hand.

Are you comfortable working on the electronics yourself? Can you solder? If so you could probably get a Classic Series '65 Mustang and upgrade the bridge pickup on it yourself to match the KC one. Alternatively, you could ask a guitar shop to do this for you but that would obviously add costs.

The wood is a whole other matter. A lot of people (me included) would say that the type of wood doesn't have much on an impact on the sound compared to other things (construction (whether bolt-on or set neck or through neck), bridge type, pickups, scale length etc.). I would never consider wood when buying a guitar. I regard it as a marketing thing and nothing more.

It's different on acoustic instruments, wood plays a bigger role. Also wood also determines how hard a guitar will wear and how comfortable it will be due to its weight.

Also, must it be the Fender guitar? Squier also make Mustangs now that get very good reviews.

Speaking as a southpaw who anticipated this sort of problem so persevered with right-handed guitars for years, I can sympathise. If you really are stuck with no new LH Fender instrument, the alternative options mentioned in this thread are worth a shot. Doing a Jimi (removing and flipping the nut, redrilling the strap button then restringing/adjusting saddles accordingly) is an option, as is considering Squier or Fender Japan (which aren't as cheap as they used to be, but the exchange rate is pretty good atm). As soldering jobs go, pickup swaps are fairly straightforward and going on personal experience with a CIJ jazzmaster: if you find one that feels right, replacing the pickups and perhaps some of the hardware gets you 90% of the way to the 'real' thing at reasonable cost. The CIJ Mustang looks great btw.

Bacchus is right too: you don't need to worry much about the wood, and Symour Duncan JB pickups are easy enough to find. Best of luck!

Thanks for the reply.

I don't think the Squiers or Classic series come in left hand. I prob wouldn't get into modding a guitar, just seemed cool to get a signature model for him since he is a bit obsessed with Nirvana.

I hadn't realised the other Mustang's don't come left handed. How strange.

You can pretty much disregard my post then...

Actually, USA dealers on eBay do indeed ship to the UK.

Here is the exact guitar you're after, for sale in Florida. Seller specifies he will ship to the UK in the listing, but asks all international bidders to contact him before bidding.

It states on the page 'does not ship to the uk' (maybe you don't see this as you're not in the uk...)

Many thanks...but it isn't Sonic Blue. Music authority did have a sonic blue one a while back but I emailed them and they wouldn't ship it to me. I've emailed them again and asked if they can supply one.

We're definitely making progress!!

Oh, sorry about that! I had Lake Placid Blue on the brain :P

You might also try emailing Musician's Outlet. Much like Music Authority, they have the right guitar in the wrong color. They do limited international shipping, and the UK is not on their exclusion list.

Right guitar, right color. Company states they only ship to US destinations "with a few exceptions." Might be worth sending an email...

Their exceptions are Canada. I've emailed them though.

I never thought it would be so hard to give people money!

Thanks for all the help everyone.

I am happy to report, one of the leads on this thread came through, and although the seller did not have one in stock, he special ordered it for me from a US retailer ($100 fee) and is shipping it over in the next few days.

Thank you all so much for your help.

I will post a pic of my sons face when he opens it!

Merry Christmas!
