Well the conversion is done, new nut is on. Now being able to play it properly it has a rather nice thump to the sound - is this a feature of the shortscale? - the neck on this is lovely nice and chunky... Pics:

No, it's because it's a hollowbody with a wooden footy bridge and non-optimal pickup placement (at least if you want that Fender-style brightness). Note how Fender pickups generally never get closer to the neck than what lead guitarists would consider a "middle" position... and those Gibson "mudbuckers" aren't actually the problem themselves, it's the fact that they stuck them right up against the fingerboard on those EBs.

I always liked my Jay Turser branded one (exact same bass) with flatwounds, both pickups engaged and the tone switch set to "solo". It gives a rolled-off tone sound, pretty old-school but the best kind of old-school.

Aye, it has a nice vintage sound... A good counterpart to my Jazz bass.

I dig it. I'd feel weird having one as my only bass but it's cool.

I quite like the Gretsch style hollowbody bass they make. Looks like it's made in the same factory as them Eastwood ones.

I'm pretty fucking happy with my SG. It's a just weighty fucker though.

A heavy SG? It looks the business in the pic you posted.

And on a SG related problem... This bass has THE WORST case of neck dive I have ever seen its mire neck plummet than dive!
