That is the old style, the Tronical ones are all on the headstock and completely removable. Personally I don't see anything wrong with them, up until recently I had 2014 SG Standard (in Walnut) that had them and they worked fine.

If you gig with different tunings between songs then you'd be mad not to try them out, especially now there is a newer firmware out now which only requires one strum to retune. Try changing a guitar that quick mid set. Newer version also has more in built tunings and more users banks available to save your own tunings in. Plus they have come way down in price, Most sets are around Â£120~130 so that's cheaper then most 2nd use giggable guitars.

As for parts wearing out in 20 years, well, get a screwdriver take them off and replace with traditional tuners. Or is you see a nice Gibson for less than 500 bucks but for some luddite reason you are put off by them, buy the guitar, 5 min job to replace with a set of Grovers or something and sell the Tronical set on eBay and get your money back on the manual tuners you just bought.

Even without the auto tuners the pots are mounted PCB style. Its plain old cost cutting a supposedly high end guitar. Makes swapping pickups a snap. Many of the PCBs have shipped with issues tho, requiring that whole part be replaced. You can fix em yourself. And void the warranty of course.

Auto tuners themselves aren't bad, however in combination with the shittily cut nuts on lots of Gibsons they don't work the best. They fixed it on the later models by adding the brass zero fret and making the neck wider leaving a rather large gap towards the edges.

I sort of like the PCB idea, but it seems an odd idea for Gibson. Like, it seems the sort of idea you would expect someone better and cheaper at making things to do.

I don't understand how they make Firebird X, Robot tuners, PCB controls, etc., yet they don't address basic flaws like a fragile neck design, weight balance, or being the last major manufacturer to use the antiquated Rule of 18 fret positions.
