Waterslides left un-lacquered could be removed with a wet rag and a bit of welly if you don't like it once it's on there. I put a pinup on a Junior that rubbed off on its own over the course of about 3 years, and even the Fender decal on my AV Strat has a bit that flecked off.
You do want to be more careful sticking/removing things if working with a lacquered guitar vs poly, but most "nitro" coats on US guitars these days are pretty resilient compared to vintage finishes, partly on purpose and partly due to workplace chemical restrictions. And if it's poly, hey, go nuts.

my first and still probably favorite. Neck is incredible. Looks are deceiving.
