Waterslides left un-lacquered could be removed with a wet rag and a bit of welly if you don't like it once it's on there. You do want to be more careful sticking/removing things if working with a lacquered guitar vs poly, but most "nitro" coats on US guitars these days are pretty resilient compared to vintage finishes, partly on purpose and partly due to workplace chemical restrictions. And if it's poly, hey, go nuts.
