G&L stands for George [Fullerton] & Leo [Fender], team behind the Strat/Tele/Jazzmaster/basses etc... it was them moving on after CBS (more accurately after Music Man).

People often point out that Leo wasnt a guitarist but George was, so outside of some very primitive Broadcaster prototypes it was never that big a hinderance with both guys' expertise on board. I think individual saddles on the Strat are often attributed to George.
