Yeah, hence the question mark in the title. May be nothing more than an interview or a feature about his use of Jazzmasters.

I'm surprised it took this long for Fender to recognize Kevin Shields as an iconic Jazzmaster player.

Yeah well, it’s not like they’re fucking idiots or anything.

I really enjoyed that, especially the serendipity moment when he first played one and discovered his sound

Me too.
I suspect there's a bit of rose tinted glasses involved for marketing purposes but still enjoyable.

Forgot how much I loved them.
Inspired me to tape up the trem and put it in weird tuning

There was a time a handful of iconic players had signature guitars, they give anyone now.
See, I think they'll sell fucking millions. They'll have (finally!) done a little research into their market, spent some time on Offset, and thought "all these disposable income fellas-of-a-certain-age love Kevin Shields".
Yep.
But if it happened it would probably have some relic nitro finish on the body and a satin neck, and them old horseshit saddles for $1500 or more. so... not my bag, baby.
Also in terms of signature guitars being for everyone now... it used to be you had to have been sloshing around in utter irrelevance for at least a decade before Fender would talk to you about a sig model. At least there are a few for active and vital artists now...

That explains it then.
Kevin Shields spent two decades in total irrelevance except amongst a very small niche group of guitar geeks and a handful of retro cool art students.

I think Kevin deserves it. Dude used them in a more iconic way then J Mascis, and he’s had 2 signature jazzmasters.
Would I buy one? No. I’m sitting on two jazzmasters that play great, don’t need another one even if they remade the loveless one. Here in Pittsburgh it seems like MVB gets a lot of love, not like he’s totally irrevelant.
I feel like if this all was happening 10 years ago we’d all be stoked instead of meh on this.
Also that Troy dude got his own jazzmaster, I don’t even know who that is. Kevin Shields is iconic with a jag/Jazz.
I don’t really know what I’m getting at with this post I just hope Fender blesses Kevin.

Kevin Shields is just Rowley Birkin with a whammy bar.

I'm old and play oddball vintage SGs now. They're both cheaper and less commonly sighted than Jazzmasters now, kinda funny.
Offsets have lost their mojo the same way Strats did. They're still unique-sounding and cool, but you see 'em everywhere, there's a billion versions you can buy, they flood the secondhand market in every pricepoint, etc... also with the offsets [a lot moreso than Strats] I'd say most of them don't sound or feel like the name on the headstock anymore. "Fender Jaguar" is just a body shape and [sometimes] a tailpiece these days like "Jackson Kelly"
Kevin Shields should obviously have one. Buuuut they'll probably put a 9.5" radius and "modern hawt" pickups in it, maybe do away with the rhythm circuit, et al

Have you posted pics of your SG's? I love an SG.

Just watched the Kevin Shields/Fender interview finally. Love hearing his stories... such a creative and innovative guy.
