I was told earlier today that I'll need to get a laptop with atleast 1 Gig of RAM. Is that true? What would be the minimum do you think?

All the new mac laptops and iMacs have something called a Core 2 Duo, which, as far as I'm aware, is just one chip, but with two processing cores inside...
I'm not really too sure what that means exactly, but the've nothing like the speeds of of the dual processors in the power macs...

All of the G5s I've used have been bad ass. Shame they cost quite so much for a decent one though. I imagine a decent G5 notebook costs you your soul.

True, protools is outrageously priced. I'd rather have an 8 channel interface with live 5 than a protools rig.

This is what I have:

http://www.roland.com/products/en/UA-1000/index.html

Edirol UA-1000 24-bit 96kHz on 10 ins and outs all at once

Image

4 kick ass mic preamps on board with TRS/XLR input, 10dB PAD and phantom power, hiZ input for DI'ing guitars and bass. A further 6 line level inputs on the back that can be taken from an external mixer. It's a fucking beast.

No it's not. It's ultrafast USB2.0 which is quicker than FireWire.

wiki link
...despite USB's theoretically higher speed, in real life benchmarks the actual speed of FireWire hard drives nearly always beats USB 2 hard drives by a significant margin.

Bob.

I can do 10 ins and outs at once with Direct or Software Monitoring and 10 different foldback mixes, at 24-bit and 96kHz.

USB 2.0 is plenty fast enough, shove your wiki link up your arse.

Protools is overpriced trash.
