What do you guys do to improve your playing?

Looper pedal is the best investment i've made
especially when informative musicians are scarce
learn different stuff, try conntry twangy stuff, then break out Kill Em All and learn some awesome rythms

just stay well versed

Who said "cookie cutter"? Knowing your way around a few scales (and not even necessarily playing them in a lead situation) means you know how to manipulate chords, how to add harmonies, and so on. But knowing how stuff works also means you know how to break it and fuck it up all the more effectively.

Knowing scales doesn't mean they have to be used. I write stuff more than learn stuff, and that helps me find a position or something that I might not have thought of before.

In the last six years or so, when I've had an idea without a guitar near me, I've automatically gone 'Oh, I could try that scale to get that effect/harmony/whatever.'

Another fun thing that I have been dicking around with is what Wayne Krantz talks about. Where you keep a 4 fret area and just play only inside of that area and pick a key and try playing random "formulas". So for instance say you pick frets 7-10 to play in, on all strings only play on those frets. Then pick a key and a random "formula" like 1, flat 3, 3, 5, flat 7, 7 (whatever you want) and try to play them within those 4 frets. Then try making melodies out of it and chords and scales etc. After a while you start coming up with some really odd sounding cool shit.
