I never said there was anything wrong with Squier. I've owned plenty, left them stock, and liked them.

As for the stock tuners, they are just like the WD/Kluson white tipped models except for no logo. Probably made by Ping. They felt tight, but my experience with Ping is that they loosen up quickly and then have backlash.

'Scuse me, but I have to go "dabble in electronics" on the space shuttle now...

edit: The stock pickups are great, really. I was pleasantly surprised. As for the pseudo cap.. I had a pack of five and used one for a customer on a $trat project a few years ago. It was a left over. Big deal. I think it was a clever idea of the guy who made them, some nuts pay $250 for an original that probably doesn't even work...

You go fullerplast! I swear I love this place, but, unfortunately, the 'anti-corksniffery backlash' is a bit over-the-top at times. Same as Haunting Mids - it often feels like everyone is in a race to log the 'hipster/indie cred correct opinion' of anything that's said or done. On the bright side - since what you've done is against the prevailing trends here, it's actually punk as f_ck. Regardless of matters of taste, buying a cheap guitar & then modding it to suit your own tastes is DIY & quite cool IMO.

Don't get me wrong, nice things are nice, it's just there's often a crossover between cork-sniffing and missing the point of the guitar, although the point of a guitar can be what you make it, I suppose.

I agree.. I just thought I would make this one a little closer to the "point" of the original.

I'm not trying to pass it off, I'm not that way. Besides, there's so many other inaccuracies such as the conversion neck/bridge placement and contoured body.

Nobody personally insulted him, or even his guitar. You can do whatever here and most people don't care even if they think it's wacky, but you can't post nothing as silly as, here is my replaced cap in pseudo paper housing and not have me laugh at how silly it is.

To me, it's no different than someone that buys a new car and changes the wheels and tires or sound system. Nothing wrong with it stock, they just prefer something a little different. I grew up with a dad who built hot rods. Nothing stayed stock very long around our house. Even my moms car got tweaked. He would buy reproduction vintage parts for cars if that was the look he was going for on that particular car. Seemed cool to me.

well it is different because unlike wheels, nobody can see the cap....so as an aesthetic upgrade it fails miserably.

I say while you're at it, you should have a new body made that has the right routes and then lightly relic it to look like a 57 duo. Also, while you were refinishing the neck, you shoulda re-profiled the neck to give it a "V" profile.

I'm down with it. I can see modifying to taste. I can also see playing it as is (because i am lazy) and reporting back from the front lines. I also agree that there is a numb-nuts approach to mods and an experimental, devil may care fucking around approach. Your rationale works for me.

I think what these guys object to is making mods to the minutiae that don't affect the performance. Using Cooter's car metaphor, I can understand replacing the exhaust system on a Honda but not putting a spoiler on it (or anything, really). Yet few of us will ever drive a real hot rod, so anything we can do to trick the car can go a long way toward satisfaction. I use orange drops because I like how they look and sound, and are easy to work with. Faux replacement parts bother me because I end up wanting to either get the real thing or not bother. Authentic is an expensive, slippery slope. I don't think I own a single guitar that hasn't already been tampered with, or has its own parts and paint.

I am just happy they are making those Duos. I think I would be tempted to sand the shit on the back of the headstock just because it's not aesthetic. Where did you get the tuners? I was looking all over for that sort of thing.
