I used to play 009's on my Jag-Stang. I recently switched to 011's. Now it sounds much grungier, because that's what Cobain played. I even play it out of tune half the time. If you tune the guitar properly, it's less grungey and good, because Kurt Cobain didn't tune the guitar properly.

w00t - a post. it's the weekend afterall...
i seem to only touch d'addarios. ernie balls are great for about two weeks but then sound like elastic bands...
found some weird cross-grade mixes that I tried for a while: things like 10s with bigger bottom (just like my women, mwa ha...), or 11's with a thinner bass end: eventually settled for stock 11s on anything short, 10's on everything else, whilst acoustics are rotosound phosphor bronze 12's...

I put 11-49 d'Addarios on my Jag-Stang btw.

Hey ElCapitan-O: learn how to spell! The word is "already". That's one "L", not two. It's bad enough that you guys can't even get out a "the" without endlessly typing "teh", but I have to draw the line at "allready" already.

Yeah, but that's how Kurt spelled it.
Armchair Bronco wrote:theshadowofseattle wrote:10's. NOTHING ELSE. Even on fucking acoustics.
Man it up, dude!
12's are the absolute minimum size I use on my acoustic Takamine -- after my next fret job, I'd like to try out some 13's, since it's pretty much impossible to bend 12's anyway.
On a short-scale, I think anything less than 11's get too floppy, especially if you tune your guitar down a full step (Nirvana) or use bizarro de-tunings ("The Rain Song").

Dude: what makes you think that just because I mentioned Cobain in passing, I'm somehow forcing myself to use #11's when, in fact, I'd be much happier with #8's?
I'm confused....

Hey, in case you're interested, I tracked down a picture of Kurt playing the 12-string Stella, along with his recepit from the pawn shop. I'm adding this in the interest of accuracy, since this thread has descended into the depths of rumor and innuendo.
The Stella
Kurt's Receipt
Summary from http://www.kurtsequipment.com/
"Stella Harmony 12 string acoustic, serial # 1460H912 but only had 5 nylon strings on it that were never changed. It was sunburst in color, flattop, with a white screw-on pickguard, and a floating wood bridge which was glued down. It was purchased from Edgewater Pawn Shop and Sheridan Jewelry (cost $29.00 plus $2.23 in sales tax) on October 12, 1989, when Kurt was living in Olympia. Recorded "Polly," "Something in the Way," and the "Lithium" demo version with this guitar."

This was supposedly about string preferences on short scale guitars, you were the one that turned it into the dead guy love in.

I may have 11s on the Swinger, I'm not sure as they've been on there so long. Bassintom sent some 10s in the care package that I might put on it.

I like the fancy red string-wrap stuff on the ball end of the wound strings. I like DRs on my Strat & Tele, also 11s.

Same. It feels odd asking for "the Jazz strings" in a music shop full of rockers.
