The Fender TBX Tone Control will also work in place of any standard tone control on any guitar with passive pickups. Some American Standard Strats are equipped with this tone control to cut either treble or bass instead of the standard style that attenuates treble only. When theÿcontrol is set at the centered detent, it is off. Turning the control one way cuts treble; the other way cuts bass. The TBX can be also be wired as a master treble/bass control.

It must have came with the strat knob because I have two of them that say tone. I also foud out the acronym may Treble Bass eXpander, Tone Bass eXpander, oer either of those two with Cut replacing the expander representing the X. There's probably something official somewhere that clarifies it.

From what I gather it's two stacked pots. One is 250k and one 1meg. there's a detent in the middle of the rotation as you switch pots. I don't think it actually cuts bass. It seems like it just cuts a bit of treble even at the supposedly neutral mid position, and then allows it through as you rotate further. The control all the way up is very bright. I need to get some extra nuts on the pots to adjust the hieght properly. The seller had them way too high and it made it a little awkward to adjust because the knobs didn't sit on too well. I'll see if some of the jacks that arrived for pedal building yesterday have the same size nut and sort it out today if they do.

it seems a bit superfluous give the range you can get out of the slider switches. it could work in certain situations though, you never know.

Ok so the grounding is fucked. It's noisy, I had a look to see if anything was obviously amiss and it looked alright. Put it back together and it's worse. I'm going to rewire it with normal (ie no nonsense) pots. The switches are old and not working as well as they could. It's possibly to clean and restore them right? I have one replacement switch that I could use for whichever is the worst and I could always buy another and replace both.

Aug make a useful Wiki page on taking apart Mustang switches and cleaning them I think?

When he wasn't pissed (ie for about 5 minutes around lunch time when he'd finally sobered up from the night before and not yet started that day) he was quite reasonable. I saw his mustang wiring wiki page just now, and vaguely remember a cleaning thread. I'll look now.

He actually had a lot of knowledge. It's a shame he was generally a massive arse about sharing it with the world. YOu can still see evidence of it in his "God Complex" on jag-stang.

I used his wiring diagram to build my stang, but I believe Fender offers wiring diagrams, too, not sure if they have one for the stang, tho

I sorted out the switches (took them apart and cleaned them) and re-did the wiring on them. I also re-did the grounding on the control plate side. I'm assuming the control plate is supposed to just touch the bridge on the outside of the body because there are no holes for wires to go to the bridge. There was a less than 1mm gap between the control plate and the bridge, so I took a small metal washer, hammered it flat (it ws lipped on both the inner and outer circles), cut it in half and placed it underneath the bridge and control plate. I also sanded it to remove any grime and paint (it was quite old). Success. The guitar, she is grounded.

I still want to replace the pots, and I'm still lacking robroe covers. It's not set up to be glorious yet, but it's moving towards it.

I have one of these in that Jap Strat. To be honest i can't hear what it does unless its wound right back. I need to gut them electronics and start again to be honest, its like some electronics buff wired it up whilst on magic mushrooms.

I don't pay much attention to those sort of things. I think the only one I've actually heard the difference in was the Gordon Smith passive treble boost past 8 on the tone control.
