Are you talking about the one in mi photos? if you hold the bottom bout of the guitar and move it forward while holding the neck in place the pieces move apart. It's not checking in the finishing.

Finish cracks are very common around neck pockets, a quick way to see if the crack is in the paint or body is to follow it across the surface. A finish crack wil usually be on one plane of the guitar (usually the side), if a crack goes from the neck and around the guitar it's a huge warning sign and it's time to give it some flex tests.

The crack(s) on this one go from the neck pickup route, all the way round the guitar and down the back. The portion on the back actually goes under the finish towards the end.
I was just talking about the pics you posted. They didn't look like serious cracks, but I believe you.

I think we're fairly safe to open that net out to the whole county.

While we're talking about that shop, I'd like to ask your opinion of it.

Do you remember Duckson and Pinker from Southgate St in Gloucester? I had them 'setup' a Squier Musicmaster once. Stock it comes with a Vista Tone humbucker with a push/pull volume pot. I had a 70s 2 conductor Dimazrio in the one I took to them. All I wanted to them to do was give it a good action, intonate it and generally improve the playability. The guy spannered the wiring and raised the humbucker up to pretty much touch the strings (I think his justification was that it was better because it was louder) and I found out later broke part of the shaft of the volume pot somehow. If that happened now I'd be asking them to do it again or for a refund, but as a younger, shyer noob I let it go and just lowered the humbucker myself.

To get back to this place. It's my understanding that they're one of the better places in the area for setups and things of that nature, and I was considering getting either a partial refret or a few frets stoned, something like that anyway, for that Mustang I got recently. There's absolutely no way I'll take it to that Scottish guy in Soundhouse. I'll possibly consider A Remus but I'm not sure how good they'll be for that sort of thing.

Do you think they'd be up to the job? (jaguar shop, I assume we're being a little bit quiet about which shop it is to allow the thread starter to have a fair chance of buying a replacement jag, at least until he says otherwise.) Or do you know somewhere better? I think I'll actually need a bit of an opinion on it from the guys in the shop because I'm not sure how drastic the problem is.

The info was passed onto me and I'll be giving them a ring in the morning. :D

I'd not thought about being that cagey about what the shop is, to be honest, but good idea, now you mention it... I've pissed and moaned about local guitar shops at length before, but: fuck that Scottish guy in Gloucester, and fuck his overpriced, dull stock. Also, doubly fuck their sister shop in Cheltenham opposite the bowling green: a few years back, when by some freak of nature they had two MIJ Jags and one JM, they wouldn't let me play one (during the day on a weekday!) unless I could prove I had the money available and was able and willing to buy that day, like he was a fucking estate agent or something; not like I've got any facial tats or anything. Ironically, I actually had £750 sat in my bank account to drop on a guitar. Fuck him. Vintage Strings is ace as an Alladin's cave, but he's cack on electrics: I took my Burns Marquee in to have the trem sorted (I didn't know how to set up a strat trem at the time) and the strings changed. He did neither, but charged me for both. On the other hand, he did let me change my mind a couple of days after I'd traded guitars with him, so I put it down to him being a little eccentric.
I suppose my point is: I'm paid to do something completely different, and am not (and nor do I support) a gigging musician; but, I know these things, and have found them out fairly easily - why the fuck can't these cunts know their fucking product? Jesus, not like they're selling curtains, is it? To finally get around to answering your question, they seem the best of a bad lot. I know the bloke who's slightly boss-eyed does the setups, and I know he restored a duosonic (or something - shortscale, one neck pickup) a few years ago. He's really grumpy, which, as I'm like a small child, just makes me like him more. The only setups I've heard anything decent at all about round here are by some insane Irish fella who used to work at Sound Control in Bristol, will ask at work for you tomorrow.

Oh, and Duckson and Pinker were cunts to me to; if they're reading this - my mate Jon shoplifted fucking tonnes of stuff from you during the late 80's and early 90's - fucking good, you non-ironic piano tie wearing cunts.

EDIT: and a big woot for this being stuck in my head now:

I'm not sure what sort of money I'm looking at, but I'm guessing it will be around £60 fo a setup including some fret work, with a refret (partial or not) it's only going to go up. I'd much rather spend £30 on trains taking the guitar to bristol or somewhere and then picking it up a week or two later and actually get the job done properly.

I'm in no rush to do it as I have no money and it's only a couple of notes on a couple of strings that are causing problems. It would be nice to sort it properly though. First I need to find some chunky strings. I asked in a guitar shop if they had an 7 string sets (I could use the 6 thickest) and when they didnt I asked the largest guage they had. The guy tried to tell me that you can't buy heavier than 11s. I have no idea why these people are so unknowledgable.

I think the shop is called Music Co.

It's opposite Wilko in Gloucester.

You realise that that's just an offshoot of Scottish guy's shop?

I half-guessed. They have one of the log term guys from the other shop (30ish, spikey black hair) working there and everytime they dont have what you want (ie everytime) they suggest you go to Soundhouse. When I said "I've tried there already, I'll try A Remus" they've looked at me as though the shop doesnt exist.

james / benecol- do either of you live near or within reasonable travelling distance of pershore?

there's something potentially very nice there that i'm aiming to do a deal on, but i can't seriously start negotiating a price without inspecting the item... and i'm 400 miles away. if it came to it would one of you guys be willing to make a visit and give the thing a once over on my behalf? i'll cover any petrol / train fares if you were willing to do it. i've to phone the guy this evening to discuss it.

normally i wouldn't be averse to hopping on a train, but this is my first day back at work after 5 weeks off and if i announced to my boss that i'm nipping off again for a couple of days i think he'd tell me not to come back! and it's a fair old hike.

on the other hand, if it's difficult to get to / you can't be arsed/ you think i'm being an extremely cheeky fucker for asking then i'll resign myself to letting it go and no harm done!

Stewart: You don't need any more Vintage Fenders. Leave some for the rest of us

If it's a Gibson, go ahead and fill your boots.
