I actually got into jaguars by watching Red Hot chili peppers Under the Bridge...and later suede's trash videos...I knew then I wanted one...

Hate to say it, but I never got into Nirvana. all my friends were crazy about them, but I was a big Oasis fan and then an obsessive Manics fan, and I could just never relate.
Got interested in Jaguars after getting into Placebo, and seeing Brian Molko on the front cover of Guitarist with his vintage Jag. Such a cool looking axe, I just had to buy one..(funnily ernough though, he actually spends most of the article slagging Jaguars off, saying how they're difficult to play and set up, and it was true..in those early years he used to switch guitars after every song due to them constantly going out of tune)

I know it's so cliche, but Nirvana and The Flaming Lips were my original offset inspiration. I always liked the Jag better than the Mustang. I didn't like Jazzmasters as much at the time because I thought the pickups were ugly.
I remember going to the local music store when I was in junior high and staring up at an MIJ Jag they had on the wall. I think it was $600, which was BIG FUCKING $$$ when you're 13 years old....
Aaah memories.

Haha I love this performance; they were supposed to be playing Lithium not Territorial Pissings, hence the slightly dodgy camera work and deafening feedback during the aftermath (which is the point that you realise just how fucking loud it was).
TWUE WOCK.

"They're available for childrens birthday parties and bar mitzva's." Have to give the host credit for not missing a beat. That Ween video was on Beevis N' Butthead back in the day. Every time I watch it now all these adolescent memories come rushing back.

I wrote before that when I first handled Fredo's(now Bubble's?) Turq Jag I really didn't "get it", and it wasn't until our SBL Jag came into the house that things started to make sense to me. It's a beauty to be sure, and the sheer sound of a short/bright attack and phase switching makes it probably the most uniquely-sounding guitar in the quiver.
'Twas nearly 13 years ago when I picked up The Violet Burning's self-titled album(see my California Connection #2 comp for the excellent Arabic Tremolo Radio) and saw Andy Prickett with a Jag and Jeff Schroeder with a Jazzmaster. The both looked so sexy(the guitars, that is), and the video that came out later showed a 22-year-old Jeff and his CAR Jazzy, during TVB's most Pumpkinesque era ('94-'96):
This was the video that did it for me concerning the Jazzy/Jag shape:

Lately Jeff has been seen with a strange Bigsby'd Jazzmaster with P-90s when not touring with SP, and I heard he has just finished tracking the latest Lassie Foundation album with the rest of the Foundation, now that they're technically recording as a band again. Taken from a The Violet Burning gig last year:

I was 4 months old when Nevermind was released, and not even 3 the day Kurt died (on my moms birthday D:)
But when I was in 8th grade a new kid I met was quite obsessed about Nirvana, and I caught on to this obsession. I'd go on youtube and watch live performances and when i first saw the SNL performance (for teen spirit)...all I could think was holy shit that's the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen. Then I saw videos of the blue Mustang and fell in love with that. It wasn't just Cobain though, I am also a huge mudhoney fan, they are both probably the reason why I still think when I get the mustang i feel like i MUST put a humbucker in it (puts up flameshield)...I probably wont end up doing it for a while, but I will probably put a JBJR in the bridge if the pups are as weak as the reviews say. I am still quite a huge Nirvana & Mudhoney fan, but since the summer I've been listening to a fuckload of Black Flag, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, Jerrys Kids, etc... and alot of street punk like Lower Class Brats, Total Chaos, Clit 45, etc...so I've kinda been looking at Les Pauls too...but I think mustangs / jags are still where it's at

Ok so that Jonathon Ross performance was actually pretty influential in my love for the burst'n'tort jags, and I distinctly remember sneaking a play on my CIJ Jag when it was being kept in my parents bedroom before Christmas and playing Territorial Pissings on it... y'know, in the mirror. I had just stolen LTSO from the library (made a copy that didn't turn out well, then transfered all the labels onto the copy so I could turn it in and keep the original).
I already had my Jag-Stang, which I bought because I couldn't find an affordable Mustang. I wanted teh Kurdtz, but not the super-obvious-kurdtz. My brother gave me nevermind when Cobain killed himself, I had just turned 11 and bought a guitar the next year, so any kind of Nirvana worship is pretty much unavoidable and stupid for me to lie about. It was 4 years later when I got the shortscales, I wasn't fully obsessing still but cobain-related stuff was still driving my aesthetic taste as far as gear goes.

you do realise that cobain's cherished '69 competition mustang didn't have a humbucker in it? and if you ask any of the mustang users here i guarantee you most of them will think the pickups are anything but weak (certainly on a vintage one or a '65 RI). i wouldn't pay any attention to reviews on places like harmony central, generally the opinions are completely idiotic.

You'll probably find you will like the SE more. Its more 'plug in and play'. The trouble with Fenders finest is in most cases they need tweaking in several areas to get them at their best and it is a labour of love. Single coils are unforgiving, they are more delicate and defined, that is why a lot of great lead players prefer them. A bad player with single coils will quite simply sound fucking awfull.

It also depends if i like the feel of the PRS more or not...I hope it does have a brighter sound than the Les Paul...Either way whichever one I get next week or so, I'll more than likely get the other in january or february.
just out of curiosity what should I base my decision on, comfort or tone?

and there's nothing wrong with putting humbuckers in any guitar. the hum hate is soooooo 2007, it's not even funny. it all depends on the tone you're going for, and since none of them can replicate 100% what the others do, each pickup has its place.

Yeah, I cant lie, I got a j-s cause i was in a major Teh Kurdtzzzzzzz epidsode. I really wanted a jazzmaster, but noone stocks jazzmasters. Im not complaining, I've been playing my j-s recently, and its kind of a rock machine. Im way to used to playing a hollowbody'd Gretsch... I need a tele. I really want a jazzmaster. I need to work more hours.

I never noticed what guitars teh Kurdtz used when I was into Nirvana for the first time. I got into Mudhoney in a big way alot later and really loved the look of Hagstrom IIIs so I got one of them instead.
The use of Jaguars by crap-era Suede and eurogoth nomark Molko (the fucking goblin) put me off them for quite a while, but I got one a few years ago because I love Jazzmasters and wanted to try the Jag.

I usually go with tone over comfort but a compromise is the best. Most people look for Tone, Comfort (including playability), Looks and cost, they use their influences as a starting point as this thread states.
The SE to me is like an upmarket Epiphone, i'm not overly impressed yet i'm not disappointed either. Mine does sound a little dull with some FX, but at rehearsal volume you begin to understand why... it works well at loud volume. Just the right balance. If you like trebly guitars look elsewhere.

When I was quite a bit younger I fell in love with the look of the Duo Sonic, but couldn't get a hold of one. Then the local music shop got a Mustang in, and I liked it cause it looked like the Duo. So I tried it and fell in love with the way it played and bought it.
Kurt Cobain never came into it. I didn't start listening to Nirvana until recently.

They have music shops on the Orkneys? Are there any venues near you?

Haha, yes we have music shops! There used to be 3 in fact, but there's only really one decent one nowadays.
And yeah, there are a few venues around here. There are a couple of 'nightclubs' which are pretty good for gigs. There are also various community halls etc that have gigs occasionally. A lot of pubs too
