I was going to say what I thought about humbuckers, but hurb ruled this thread so hard. There's not much point anymore.

I like both. Which is why I have more than one guitar.

The mud argument is a bit tired these days. It all depends on the gear you're using and the pickup in question.

Whilst Hurb makes a good argument, and for which I have a lot of respect....he might just be wrong
I have guitars with Humbuckers, Singles, Lipsticks and P90s - all of which I play for different things.
Guess it depends on what you are going for. There are some things that singles just can't do.
Like Fran said, there's just something about humbuckers and a slab of mahogony!

Ok, Im still thinking on guitars.. Which to get better Gretsch Electromatic with Dearmonds, or the Electromatic one with HUMbuckerz ? Really.. Im thinkin for real guys here.. I finally have got the money. (took 1 year)

If the choice was Gretsch Electromatic vs 'something else' I'd go with something else. For the choice you have I'd say Dearmonds just because they'd look better, though buckers will give you easier switching options should you want to change pickups.,

Youd Say to go with something else.. Like an Casino or the Eastwood made Hollow bodies (maybe fender thinlines 72'/69' ?) A jazzmaster (woah) !? I played the dearmond one in London it was good, but it had only the neck pickup usable.. (I could be incorrect) That got me down, but I loved the color, hah. But I really need to make the 'right' decision, cause Im just a little boy collecting money by making little webpages..

If you want a semi I don't really know the alternatives that well but you have a lot of options that will get you more guitar for you money. If you want a solidbody, I'm not sure if they're as underwhelming as the semis, but your options there are huge. A two pickup Edwards LP jr (if they make one) will probably give more value for money at a similar price.

I have a stratocaster deluxe players, and by what Ive played hollow bodies I like something about teh sound (Artcore was nice, but I played one, that looked very cheaply built) .. Ive played the Thinline 69' I liked that one a lot (the only difference between the 69 and 72 is the wide range pickup, right?) So Yea, Ive been googling and reading listening things on Youtube a lot.. But never had a chance to play out a bunch of guitars by myself (only on trips).. Ive always been interestend in a jazzmaster or something (but I dont know if thats what Im looking for, right now ).. The guitar would be mostly used on songs like Nick Drake/Leonard Cohen (fingerpicking, folk, etc) , for power chords and rocking out I have my Mexicano Stratocaster.. (my band/playing is very odd, and we dont have correct style..as I said all from folkish songs to Richard Hell, Televison, Talking Heads like music, not far as good thou') // My devotion to topic -

My 5 favorite pickups in order are

1. Gibson p-90
2. Gibson PAF style
3. Danelectro Lipstick
4. Teisco Gold Foil
5. Fender Strat Single coil because it rules with fuzz, if it wasn't for how nice it sounded with fuzz i'd put an old Dearmond Dynasonic ahead of it.

Problem is, most people's experience with humbuckers are with cheaply made stock ones or very high output "distortion" type, giving them this muddy reputation.

In reality, a good low output vintage PAF (<8k output) can be just as responsive as a single coil, and it doesn't necessarily have to have massive midrange or bass either. I think both have their place, this is why I favours guitar with sc neck, humbucker bridge.

i agree though, it all depends on what sound you're going for.
i used to really like the reissue wideranger in my tele custom. i'd use it all the time with the tone all the way down (omfug). but, something changed, and now i like a mix of the single-coil and humbucker, it makes for a nice thick, yet still defined sound.

My jag is neck position single coil and bridge position JB Jr so I went with a P94 style pickup in the neck of my epi SG when I rewired it going for that sort of set-up. I think I like that best, single in neck and bucker in bridge.

On telecasters it's unnecessary because the bridge pickup is ballsy as fuck and I don't feel like doing it with my Les Paul, so there are 2 applications where I'd go with 2 of either, I'm easy really.
