anyway, any of the suggestions here are better than paying that ignorant tech money to replace it with a jag bridge for no reason, right? but by all means, attempting to set up the JM bridge can't hurt, and it's free if it works in the end.

I dropped an epiphone tune-o-matic onto my jag and left it there for 4 years without any other modifications. A neck shim was not called for. The large posts of the import tune-o-matics fit into the existing stock jag/jazz bridge cups perfectly, they just don't screw in and the height is not adjustable. I had the action slightly higher with that set-up, but that's cool because I was doing mad bends anyway, hence the TOM. That's the longest running set-up I had on my jag, the ever-so-slight movement that the bridge did have actually aided a more dynamic and in-tune trem bar experience.
As far as direct drop-ins go, I couldn't have hoped for a better result. Perhaps slightly lower action on the higher frets but it was perfectly playable.
Tried it on the jag-stang once and the action was sky-high and would have required a shim.

Immediately before and ever since using the TOM on the jag, I used/use a Mustang bridge. Mustang bridges only stop the strings popping out on percussive, choppy strums. High bends will still choke out with a Mustang bridge.

anyway, take everything with a grain of salt, except the last part of that post. my bad for taking it too far.

throwing parts at a guitar is a noob move, but making an educated decision to replace a part with one better suited isn't, generally speaking. last i checked the jag/jm bridge was generally considered a flawed design and countless people had replaced them with mustang bridges with good results.

also, isnt a TOM going to be 12" radius and therefore incompatible? interesting to hear that yours worked so well, paul_.

The "TOM" he's replacing it with is one made by fender specifically for jazzmasters/jaguars.

okay, im convinced that mustang bridges are not the way to go. i guess i need to spend some more time with jazzmasters and figure out the nuances better.

Yeah, but like i have pointed out, there is nowhere for the posts to screw in on a CIJ Jazzmaster. The only way to do it is the mod paul_ mentioned which in most cases makes the action high and you end up shimming the neck.

All this is old ground, i thought we'd resolved all this back in the day.

Nah this research was conducted with 54-11s. And according to the Bridge Police bigger strings stay better (certainly not true when you get up to the 60/70 range) by creating more tension on the saddles.

I've never had any problems with stock saddles to be honest, i also use 10's and i probably play thrash metal more than anything else. To knock the strings allover the place you must be trying to be Pete Townsend or Gary. I dont get it.
