Is this competitor meant to be competitive? For example, not ridiculously expensive in the way Fender has managed to make the Hot Rod series in relation to what they can actually do? Something that might stand a chance at not being completely blown away by a Peavey alternative that costs less than half the price? Because if they meet all the requirements above, I might just be a little bit interested.

I get the impression that the companies love the 5W craze. You take a generic SE power section, diode rectifier, and tack your signature preamp on it. Then produce the whole thing in China or Vietnam and run it off of a 12AX7 and EL84, the 2 cheapest guitar tubes.
I don't imagine Marshall would be any different. The most revolutionary thing I see them doing is 2 channels. One with the old-school Bassman-derived preamp and another that ups the gain and adds clipping diodes for EIGHTIES TONEZ. I would be amazed if it went over $250 street stateside.

Marshalls in England aren't overpriced. The Hot Rod Deluxe is £649 and does fuck all, you can get a lot of Marshall for that money.

Good point, I need to stop thinking about Marshalls in the same way as Gibsons.
