I think that both the JVM and the 6100 get close to the way the JCM800 sounds. The Crunch Orange & Red modes were similar on the JVM, although the real thing has more bass than the Orange mode and less flabby bass than the Red mode, it's very similar to the 6100 Crunch channel as far as I can tell, and on the cards somewhere down the line will be a shootout between them to see how close you can get. I'm not really sure how much of it is psychosomatic or the fact that it's "new" but I do love playing it, I seem to feel more of a connection to the amp, however ridiculous that sounds. The DSL50 that Doog has is also similar on the Classic channel Crunch mode, although again I think it's a slight difference in "balls" or "bark" that might be discernable.

I will know more after rehearsal tomorrow night with it. But I think first impressions are that it sounds great, really ballsy and aggressive Marshall Crunch that we know and love, I think anyone who claims the JVM and 6100 can't get so close that an audience would never tell though is completely full of shit - you can definitely get the vibe of this monster with other Marshall amps. Whether they completely reproduce the raw mystique of the thing is a different matter, and one of dubious importance.

However I love this amp, and I have always wanted one. I'm looking forward to seeing what the simplicity does for my playing, and also it's a sound investment. It will not cost me anything to have owned this amp, if I ever do choose to sell it for whatever reason. However it being made in my birthyear, it seems unlikely to me.

Definately a different tonality between that 2205 and DSL50, they're even going into the same 1960A. Rounded midrange or summat.

I take it the amp will make an appearance at Doogfest III?

You knows it. You'll all be able to play it and make your own minds up. The 2205 actually has diode clipping in the Gain channel like the JCM900 they still sound damn good, the 2204 is all tube overdrive so it has less gain than the 2205 but also means it's less compressed.

And such glorious JCMgasms, even from the cheapcam mic! That tubey compression audible on upper gain roaring is sweeter than honey. Fun to see it looming in your living room, it's like emerging from the kitchen and finding a clean-cut Gimli the Dwarf suddenly standing there with a very large erection fully-drawn axe.

Awesome! sounds great, i recently got me a JCM TSL 100. I really love it.

Great score, Mike. The 2204 is an awesome amp and by far my favorite Marshall. It's such a simple design and rocks balls, loudly.

Nice dude! Sounds good! I've always liked the way JCM 800's sounded! Our last guitar player had one and it sounded amazing. Our current guitar player has been playing a JCM 2000 DSL 50, then he traded it in to sam ash for a JCM 800 cause he thought the 2000 had too much gain, but then he thought the 800 didn't have enough gain so he traded it back to them for his 2000 again... poor decision in my opinion... but to each his own.

Dont people use power breakers with them? Where you can dime it out but half the volume or something? Im sure that Justin Haywood out of The Darkness used one.

Yeah, it's in an open back 2/12 combo and gets pretty bright sounding, but I pair it up with a closed back 2/12 for an awesome full sound. I've done a couple of cool things to it like adding a tube buffered fx loop and a 6 way gain switch. I have been thinking about building a second one and just for the aesthetics it will look like a Fender. I'm thinking a '64 blond Bandmaster :}
When I first joined the boards I also had a killer '81 half stack that was moded out. I didn't play it too much because it didn't really fit the style of music I was playing and was a bitch to move about.
