I checked out the TC electronic G-Major, for £250 really good. You have to play it with your own amp though as your fx loop may be shit like mine is. Tried it at shop, cant remember the amp. But tried it with mine (wel same model) and didint really work

my first multi-fx board was this:

even though it boasted a 12ax7 in the preamp section, the drive tones were pretty flat and uninspired. besides, i've been a marshall man for so long, i haven't really needed extra dirt. i mainly used it for silent tuning and chorus. every now and then i'd mix in some eq'ing or a wah, but that was pretty rare.

then i stepped up to this:

boss gt-6


i actually kinda liked this thing, but the only reason i got it was my marshall's footswitch kept dying on me, and they were mega expensive to replace. so i paired the midi output of the gt-6 with a cfx4 function switcher and switched channels that way for years. the fx, i thought, were great. in fact, the distortion is heard at the beginning of one of my last band's songs as i needed something really raw and raunchy but totally different from my TSL. i thought the chorus was good, the slicer was good, and the cab emulators were great for recording demos. the eq was amazing. . . and, really, it's no wonder i liked the device since i've always enjoyed the boss pedals i've owned. i got rid of it when i bought the jvm which has a much better footswitcher and four channels.

at the end of the day, i think it really depends on what you're looking for on these things. they've definitely come a long way in terms of the sounds they can make, but i've never been a modeling fan, so i'd steer clear of the ones that boast this as their primary goal. instead, if you're going to get a multi-fx unit, make sure it's just combining effects in an efficient, noise-resistant way (the boss gt line is cool for this). i don't really care for having a lot of effects, so i get by with my amp, a tuner, an eq, and a chorus that gets turned on once every month.

i had the bass version of that boss unit jason posted on. i fucking loved the thing! it had great effects (fucking duh, it's a boss), great features, and was a lot of fun to fuck around with. i had to sell it right after DJ was born because i needed the cash, and i regret that i did. now that i don't have an amp, i have to use POD farm to track bass...which is a'ight (but it's WAYYYYY better for guitars), so i'm sure i could use it...maybe next month i'll get one used on teh bayz0rz.

BADASS. it's like a programmable pedal patchbay. that would be really cool to make one.
