I run the risk of recommending what I use, but:

Marshall AVT150H, + cabinet.

It's basically solid state (they've sellotaped a valve to the inside to make people feel better, but it's solid state). It's versatile as anything, can do everything from crystal cleans through to ridiculous gain, and has all possible points in between. In my opinion, it has always been the most amp you can get for the least money, on this side of the pond, at least. It's my go-to amp, except that it's recently shat itself, but I've not heard anybody else who had a complaint.

Solid state gets a bad rap, my Sunn Beta Lead is amazingly versatile and as warm or evil as you want it to be.

paul, thanks but those over here are more then the tube options i'm looking at.

as it stands i use a fender solid state that is pretty versatile, but i'm just not happy with it.

played a tiny terror as well as a jcm 800 today
loved the overdrive i got from the tiny terror, but didn't have enough presance.

the jcm was nice, but not cost effective, and i'd want to put in sovtek tubes right away.
so as out of the box it doesn't do what i want, whats the point?

guitar store employees can be huge douche bags some times, the guy i bought an acoustic and cab off of in the same week didn't recognize me when i came in the next week and made an smart ass comment as i left. it's nice to be reminded once in a while why brick and mortar locations are falling to online retailers.

Was he the typical snakeskin boots/flamey shirt employee? Those motherfuckers are what keeps me out of gear stores most of the time haha.

http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/msg/1313718621.html

Thiiiiiiiis is the one. I could even pick it up if he doesn't want to ship. No footswitch though... :( and shipping would be a beast. she's heavy.

Buuuut... http://sunn.ampage.org/sdp/index.php/topic,4355.0.html thats how to make one, you could do it yourself or outsource to one of our friendly pedal makers.

I bet we could get him down to $150 or lower. ;)

Alternatively there is a head on ebay...
http://cgi.ebay.com/SUNN-Beta-Lead_W0QQ ... t_776wt_65

Bear in mind, the head is the same exact unit as the one in the combo, 4 screws out and you get the heady in a tidy little metal box. Just no tolex headcase.

Awesome sauce amp my friend. Awesome sauce.
