Yeah pretty much, and the 6100 has basically got the two sounds the JCM800 does well (Clean and Crunch) footswitchable, so it just makes it a better amp for me personally and the music I'm making in that band.

If I was playing guitar in Pancakes! instead, the 800 would be perfect as all our songs have dirty guitars basically, but Sell Crazy is more clean/dirty stuff and I needs them spanky cleans. The 6100 when played right next to the 800 on the Crunch channel doesn't quite nail it because there is a slight difference in the mid emphasis, but separate it's so close you'd never know. The EQ is more powerful on the two channels also.


I'm going to record with the 800 this weekend though.

One tone I am looking for that I have never dialed in is a late 40's/50's archtop sound, not like a proper Gibson but even more "lo-fi". This might be impossible however cause so many things come into play, like how those records were recorded and how I play them back. It might be a tone that exists in my head more than reality.

definitely how they were recorded. they didn't do any close micing back then. they just had one microphone in the middle of the room and arranged the band around it for an appropriate mix. so basically you're picking up an extreme amount of room and you're not going to get any of the bass response of close micing. you could get pretty close to it today with similar micing techniques. also, then there's the frequency response of all the equipment to consider. it's pretty much a tone that only ever existed on record.

What recordings are you thinking of? Have you an example?

i'd thought i'd update this, as now i do feel happy with my tone.

my go to guitar is my strat. it's the one i always tend to pickup and play. the tele is close second. my frustration with my tone has been solved with the realisation
that the pickups in the strat are taking the mids away from my sound. the custom shop 69 pickups have a scooped mid range, which is probably why the strat has always sounded too bright.

i've since messed around with amp settings to get a nice mid-rich clean sound, which is all good till i used my mudhoney. i was getting harsh tones, that couldn't really be tamed without messing with the amps tone controls, killing my clean sound.
the answer was to get the DLS back on the board. the marshall mid range sound works well with what i already have on the clean channel and really sounds great cranked up. i can get that nice gritty strat sound without it sounded like an ice pick. really happy now, it's working out really well.

Swing Hailey played a fun show last night and we did it loud. Costello Jazzy/Twin Reverb at 3 or 4 with the Box of Mike for usual gainy stuff and the Eau Claire Thunder for fuzz. I got tons of comments from people saying that they loved my sound.

Its interesting because I'm hardly a stickler for "tone", its important but not as important as staying in tune and in good performance mode. I'm not out there for the ultimate tone but thanks to my good friends from here I've got my sound that I'm BEYOND happy with.

saltbooster into an almost slapback delay but slightly longer is my sound most of the time and it does exactly what i want it to.

Currently Running a Jaguar into a RAT2 into a V55HD.

The rats are great and I'm quite satisfied with the jags neck pickup (novak). I use the clean channel on the Bugera (iffy gain channel) then kick on the rat for all else. I think I need an over drive. I also go through a Small Clone

i think a bit of modulation would be nice for me. i miss my phase 90 a little.

Unless you flogged your chicken salad, drill a hole in the fascia like I have; really rating mine at the mo.

i like the chicken salad, it just lacks bottom end. want something a little deeper sounding.
