I think the tubescreamer is a good pick. But I hate it.

i posted it on the first page. and i agree with your points.

Tubescreamers work great for two things:
1. Into a Fender style amp with single coil guitars. You have a mid scooped sound for rhythm. The TS will give you presence, volume and cut for your solos/lead parts.
2. Into some sort of metal amp to tighten up its inherent flubbiness. (I don't play metal myself, but I see them on boards of such guitarists' frequently)

I think they sound terrible going into Voxes and Oranges, and their utility with Marshalls depends heavily on the model (good results with a bluesbreaker, not so good with a JCM).
