A JTM45 was one of Marshalls first amps, it's circuit was based off of fenders '59 bassman except it uses el34s. Eric Johnson uses them For a large part of his sound.

There's just something great about that circuit, simplicity mainly but you have to really crank it to get it's signature sound out of it.

i use a american standard strat, a jagstang, a cv duosonic or a cyclone. My amp is a marshall jtm45. It goes to a old orangebox with 4 g12h speakers. I also use a sovtek big muff and a boss od2. But for really crunchy sounds, the ds1 works best.
For the ones who believe to vodoo: My ds1 is made in japan.

Ignore the technical bits in my last statement, the first marshalls that "borrowed" from the bassman circuit ran on 5881s until they became too expensive for them to import, they then switched to the cheaper British KT66 and later on the EL34

i got a boss ds1 for free and sold it for 3 dollars.

my boss ds-1 is made in taiwan...
as all my other boss pedals..

i own:
boss distortion ds-1
boss turbo distortion ds-2
boss super chorus ch-1 (works great) love the chorus from that one
boss fender 65 deluxe reverb-amp (works also great) a little bitt of distortion is in the sound and i dont know why?
digitech - grunge pedal (and i think its better than the ds-1 and 2
dunlop crybaby 535 q the best wah-wah pedal aviable (for my sound)
korg tone works ax 1500g (dont know why but its great)

Your distortion on your clean sound is likely to be the grundge pedals bypass leaking through. It's a fairly common problem for those pedals, not so common on boss pedals but it still can happen. Unless it still occurs when you run guitar>amp without pedals at all, then it could be a number of thngs with a valve amp that would need attention.

One reason could be: When i want a brilliant treble clean tone, i use only channel 1 on the jtm45. In this channel, the big muff sounds very good. When i use channel 1 and 2 (patching), the clean sound is more bassy. Then the ds1 is great. Check out a very bassy tone on your amp (search a more close/muffled/hollow tone) and tell us, how the ds1 sounds then...

Ok, first let me say I'm not a pedal or tone snob. I have owned both a made in Taiwan and Made in Japan DS-1. There is a difference. Satriani and Kurt used MIJ ones. When I first started playing guitar, I thought I could buy a brand new MIT DS-1, and I would sound just like Kurt. I was wrong. Kurt did not use regular guitar amps, he used extremely high wattage power amps, with Mesa/Boogie tube preamps. For distortion he used the MIJ DS-1 until it broke and replaced it with a MIJ DS-2. He later used a Tech 21 Sans Amp Classic.


I would recommend you look for a black label MIJ DS-1, and a black label SD-1 (It complements the DS-1 very well, and sounds better than the modern tubescreamer. Black label means the label on the bottom of the pedal. You can also look into modding your DS-1/2. Search youtube for mods to hear them. There are plenty of people who do mods on ebay, and sell modded pedals. You can also check out the Tech 21 Sans Amp, ProCo Rat, Electro Harmonix Big Muff, and of course the Marshall GV-2 Guv'nor Overdrive as suggested by Mike (who makes effect pedals).

I have the CH-1 chorus, which is a silver label, but it does sound good. Basically when it comes to Boss pedals older, and MIJ is better than New and MIT. Some early MIT are good, but they usually have black labels.

Personally, I've always wanted a Marshall Shredmaster, but they are rare/expensive.

Boss DS-1's and other pedals can be modified to make them sound way better. I modify and make guitar pedals, and do guitar tech work for a living. PM for details. You can chose what you want your DS-1 to sound like. If you can solder, you can mod your own.

you can do that.. but let me say.. you only pay for the BOSS logo, not a good effect!

Oh, I know that! My customers want their pedals modded, and I do it. But I do it only after I've let them check out my effects pedals that I make. If they want me to "polish a turd" and they'll pay me for it, then okay.

ok. what kind of effects do you make?

I make hand-made, custom built effects pedals. Everything from simple tap tempos, bypass pedals, to analog chorus, phasers, tremolos, boosters, fuzz pedals, overdrive pedals, distortion pedals, etc. I even make extreme custom builds, which are one-off's, specially designed for the person that wants what they want.

If yu are using a DS-1 dont put the Dist. or level knobs over half way or it rapes your sound. And the tone knob is pretty shit aswell. I use it for very mild driven stuff. And my Dist.
knob is never past quarter to.

EDIT: Even then its a peice of crap. But i got it for 15 quid.
