'leftover parts' implies that they stopped producing the guitars that the parts are being sourced from.
i think these were a new use for the same old parts, with little to know thought put into the development. reused strat necks? i don't buy that for a minute. re-purposed maybe, but the heel they cut from is flat like a tele. this would indicate that they were never intended for strats. they were just left-handed blanks, with 3/8" rounded off at the bottom (like no other fender bolt on neck ever made before it), and screwed to a left-handed jaguar body blank that was routed and contoured like a right handed guitar.

That makes no sense. The amount of the "lip" is pretty close to the exact difference between a 25.5" scale and a 24" scale. The necks look like non-rounded off Strat-scale lengths.hotrodperlmutter wrote:'leftover parts' implies that they stopped producing the guitars that the parts are being sourced from.

And they did stop producing them in Japan, and only kept up production of the Jagmaster with completely different parts in a different location. I'm willing to bet they were produced to get rid of extra parts in Japan.

Yes, not OG but since I am not a huge Strat trem fan, I could put a Jag trem or run through the body.Mages wrote:your template is not an OG super sonic. it's a custom build in the style of a super sonic.taylornutt wrote:So when I make my Super-Sonic project, I can just use a lefty custom 24" and it should work fine? My template has neck dimensions as well.

String Trees - of my five Super-Sonics, three have the string trees the opposite way from this neck. The other two have them the same way as this neck. So, this was not consistent. My two 1996 ones have them the same way as the neck that we are discussing. My two silver ones, made in different years (a '96 and a '97) have the string trees in opposite ways. Not that this matters. I actually never noticed until today.
The necks on the Super-Sonics are tiny - narrower and not as deep as any strat neck I've had my hands on. So if they were leftovers, they were shaved down, too.
Leftover large headstock lefty strat necks with a bullet truss rod? Does that make any sense at all? Plus, the neckplate is way different, so if the holes in the neck were pre-drilled, they would have to be filled....
The bodies are significantly smaller than Jaguar bodies. Different shape, too (access to frets).
The Vista series was a genuine effort to try to make nicer, high-end Squiers in Fender's Japan facility. The marketing failed, as it was hard to overcome the Squier-is-cheap conception. Those that have played them seem to find them to be of high quality. So, if you can get into the different shapes (subjective), and you find they are high-quality instruments, you score and are happy.
I obviously love them. And as I've posted elsewhere, my latest one is getting converted into a Fiesta / Coral Esquire. I actually received the SD Custom BG1400 for it today. Now I just have to fill the cavities with wood.

A Whole Bunch of Guitars. Some with sparkles. Some with Pearl. Some with racing stripes.

eh, i guess i'll have to take your word for it. i'm not sure how you'd know that, but it doesn't really matter enough for me to inquire.Pens wrote:That makes no sense. fender japan stopped producing left handed fender strats (where the neck/trem were supposedly sourced from), and stopped producing left handed fender jags (where the body blanks were supposedly sourced from), and then decided that with these 'leftover parts' they should make a limited run of guitars that look cool when played left handed, but are actually flipped upside down to make them really ugly?Pens wrote:And they did stop producing them in Japan, and only kept up production of the Jagmaster with completely different parts in a different location. They didn't have to stop making the guitars they sourced them from, if they were just trying to clear out a surplus stock that they had. They idea was to make a guitar that looked like a flipped Jaguar like teh Hendrix, so they sourced the parts from surplus Fender Japan shit that they had. They quit making the SuperSonic right when they moved Squier away from Japan, which makes a fuck load of sense since they no longer had easy access to FJ lefty parts.hotrodperlmutter wrote:eh, i guess i'll have to take your word for it. i'm not sure how you'd know that, but it doesn't really matter enough for me to inquire.Pens wrote:That makes no sense. Alright, fine, I mean "leftover" as in shit they had lying around, not shit they stopped making otherwise. Perhaps it was incorrect wording, but I stand behind my point: they made them with parts they already had for other guitars in Japan.

This made me actually put my Supersonic on top of my lefty Jag just to check, and actually you're right. I didn't realize until that point that the body of the SS is actually a half inch smaller around the outside than the Jag, aside from the "top horn" which is a lot smaller since they cut it away for righties to access it. It doesn't really seem that much smaller when I play the two but it is.wadeaminute wrote:Again, the bodies are different in size and shape from left-handed jaguars. And the necks are unique.
I also think I realized why the necks had that weird groove to them, without it there isn't really much wood around the neck pocket to firmly hold the neck in place, it's likely for stability of the neck in the absence of a solid sidewall in the pocket on this thing.
My argument is retracted.
