Here's an example of a Mustang with full-sized humbuckers. I like the look.

Please do this!
I'm thinking that the black/white/black/white color scheme wouldn't look right without a matching headstock. I'm leaving the neck unaltered, so that's out.

I vote for this one, but only if the humbuckers have black bobbins and no covers on 'em.
I think this is the way to go (edit: mages too). Also, no worries about derailing. Pictures of them sexy-ass guitars are welcome in any thread.

I considered tort, but only on black or white. I'm not sure how I feel about tort on blue. White pickups on tort, though, make me feel happy. They make me feel happy inside.

I agree - I personally would rather have it on the lower horn. I'm also not a big fan of the Bronco vibrato, so I'd actually rather have that fiesta Musicmaster from earlier in the thread... although I do like the knobs and color and Jag pickups of this one quite a bit.

Apparently *I* have to figure out where the pickup routs will go. I, being inexperienced, had hoped Dazbootman would take care of that for me.

I aim for the "24th fret harmonic" with the heck pickup, right? Is there a harmonic I'm trying to hit with the bridge pickup? Do I want to get it as far back as possible, or is there such a thing as getting too close to the bridge?

regular sized humbuckers can be real close to the bridge. I would reference a les paul for the distance. as for single coil pickups I think it's a matter of taste, the stratocaster, telecaster and mustang all have different placement of the bridge pickup with slightly different tonal response as a result. the telecaster has the most extreme angle and is just about the fullest sounding bridge pickup there is. the stratocaster is centered at about the same spot as the telecaster but the angle is less extreme so it doesn't quite have the lows on the low strings or the highs on the high strings like the telecaster. the mustang is the same as the stratocaster but moved a bit closer to the bridge and as a result a bit thinner sounding. there are other factors at play like pickup construction and the different bridges but roughly, that should give you an idea of what it'll sound like.

G&L MFD Pickups
Those are neat! How do I get them for less than $100 a pop?

if you figure it out, lemme know. i've been unable to find them for less.

although dude who had that set of cream ones in his jag, has removed them and was selling them for like $120 for the pair. they're probably already gone, but...

Still waiting on those pickups. Holding up the process right now. Until then, here's a mini photo bomb. I fucking love the figuring on this neck.

With MFDs instead of humbuckers, hopefully. I don't have white tuners and I don't have bronco knobs. Alternatively could go with black tuners and Jackson meat-tenderizer knobs. For now it'll have to be stock Mustang knobs and tuners.

Could peeps with Telecasters and Les Pauls help me out and measure from the nut (or 12th fret) to dead center of the bridge pickup? I'm Googling my heart out and coming up amazingly empty.

My Epiphone Les Paul is 10-23/32" from 12th fret to dead center of the bridge pickup. Hope that helps.

I did a measurement from the 12th fret of my ibanez and it's 10-13/16" but like a les paul it's 24.75" scale. this guitar you're making will be 24" scale correct? so you'd have to do some kind of tedious conversion to use the measurement. it's 1-1/2" from the center of the bridge to the center of the pickup. I imagine this measurement is pretty universal.

(10.8125 + (24.75/2)) / 24.75
(10.8125 + 12.375) / 24.75
23.1875 / 24.75
=
0.93686869 x 24 inches = 22.484849 inches from the nut.

using porterhaus's measurement yields 0.93308082 x 24 = 22.393939 inches

Does it actually work like that? Lord knows.

To clarify, I was unsure about the meaning of dead center of the pickup (on a humbucker). So my measurement was literally to dead center of the pickup (right between the two coils). If you need the measurement to say dead center of the poles please let me know.

I don't know "how it works" mathematically. Or even if that is the way the manufacturers go about it. But, I can imagine that during design/development stages they probably just experiment with different pick up positions to find what they like best.

No, you dun good. I was looking for dead-center dead-center smack dab between the two coils. I should've been clearer. But yeah the manufacturers can pretty much place 'em wherever, and also:

.

Corrected for scale length I think this'll hold true.

I'm stuck between 1, 2, and 3. 1 is Jaguarish, 2 is Mustangish, 3 is ASATish.

(Just realized how ridiculously far apart the pickups are. Use your imagination.)
