good news! i just popped off one dem grovers and the holes appear not to have been drilled out. so that means i can get the F tuners on instead (with the aid of some PTFE tape to tighten the bushings a bit- inb4 benecol)

bad news! i'm still one bushing short, as one from these tuners went on the coronado, and billy3000 couldn't find the one he thought he had. do an FFFFFFUUUUUUUU-

fitted 5 of the F tuners and filled the dodgy nut slot. i'll let it dry over the weekend and have a go at cutting it on sunday.

a nice chap on offset has offered to send me a spare bushing so i can get the last tuner on. it's a shame whoever removed the originals wasn't a bit more careful, but it's not as if the rest of the paintwork is pristine, so i can live with it. those grovers had been on there for some time i reckon, judging by the shade of red underneath the bushings. i also just noticed that one of them's a different make to the rest! some people, eh?

i might order some mustang saddles too, i don't really like the threaded jobs (they're on my coronado as well and they're annoying as fuck- might get some for that while i'm at it). sven is kindly being the middle man for a mute, so that should finish it off aesthetically.

Gorgeous guitar Stewart, really looks great faded that way. Your collection is just beautiful. I'm definitely another CAR "hater" but in this case I would definitely be wrong.

Although I haven't even played my Coronado yet, I'm tempted to do the same. I've never liked the look of the threaded saddles and I've found Mustang ones more comfortable.

If I do it I'll probably buy some in America after having played it for a while, so sometime around late October I imagine. If it works out to be enough cheaper to make it worth a little extra wait (perhaps the cheapest suppliers won't ship to the UK, or an ebay auction for vintage ones won't) I'd be happy to bring some back for you. I fly back at the start of December.

I absolutely hate sunburst. I currently own two solid-body guitars, one jazz box and a bass. The bass is black but all of the guitars are sunburst. If I were able to choose I'd pick different colours for all of them.

i'll have a think about it. for some reason some US suppliers have started charging ridiculous prices for shipping, and i categorically refuse to pay $30 postage for a thing that weighs less than a dead mouse. there's a company that sells aged ones, i was thinking of asking for a discount if i bought two sets (worth a try!)

i dunno what it is about the threaded saddles that makes them so shit, but i've had one flip over onto its side mid song at a gig before. they obviously aren't designed for aggressive playing. you can't swap the whole bridge plate on a coronado for a mustang one without doing some modding, as it sits on different posts. but obviously the saddles are interchangeable.

ok, i got a bit impatient and borrowed a bushing from the coronado. no more horrid tuners!

doog's tip for fixing the nut worked a treat, and it's now sounding lovely. a question- will a screw-on strat trem tip fit the arm? there's no tip with it and it's the sort of thing that'll drive me up the wall.

Maybe send the Jackson ones back to the previous owner with a passive aggressive note written with three types of pen.

Hang on a minute - don't want to come over all Offset, but are F-tuners vintage correct? Thought that would have Klusons on it?

Pretty sure that a strat trem tip wouldn't fit. Maybe just wrap some PTFE tape round it...

haha, only one was a jackson, the others were unbranded, which somehow makes it even worse. the previous owner's a nice chap though, we facebooked.

yeah, they switched to F tuners in late '65 i think. i don't want to have to buy a whole new trem arm just for the sodding tip.

well, sticking klusons on would have meant even more screw holes in the back of the headstock. i prefer klusons too but i'd rather it was as close to original as possible.

I actually do prefer F-Tuners. They look cooler imo. The ones on my Jag work just as well as the Klusons I had on my other Jag, although they're not thirty or forty years old yet.

i was soooo looking forward to rehearsing with it last night, but those fucking peavey bandit amps took care of that. i really hate them. i might as well have been playing a fucking broomhandle with an elastic band on it.

I've loved all of the sets of vintage F tuners I've had, though I've never had a vintage set of Klusons to compare them to. Just modern ones. I agree with Gavin that the F tuners look cooler.

I got a really nice vintage broomhandle off of eBay. It's got a really faded CAR finish, the neck feels so smooth and worn down. When I fit a new brush on it I'll bring it to practice and you can brush my hair to one side from across the room.
