He didn’t rip Talking heads off he was in talking heads, As for the Cure they we’re / are still just Joy Division / New Order rip offs and in turn influenced all that new metal shit(Nothing to be proud off there), and porno for pyros are just SHIT.

Signature guitars have been made for less contribution than Marr has offered through his career. I don't think "contribution to the face of music" is necessarily a factor in a manufacturer deciding to do a signature series.
Can't really deny that he's done some kinda interesting things, if not musically, at least with the instrument itself. His guitar(s) are pretty identifiable with their various modifications. The signature model could simply be a Fender company tip of the hat towards the ideas he had towards their product... an "why didn't we think of that" sort of thing.

Ok so straight up, I wasnt trying to be an ass.. yeah I am from america so I dont know whats up in other parts of the world. I have been giving guitar/bass/drum lessons for years and not one time ever had someone ask how to play anything that Marr has been involved with. Ive never seen anyone come in the shop and say "Id like to have this set up like the guitar Marr plays".

I think it's all in good humour, you'd know very quickly if people were properly pissed off..
But every single time fender announces a new sig guitar there's one group saying "oh cool!" and another saying "why?". And obviously there's another group going "too fucking expensive". And maybe a fourth saying "i'd buy it if it didn't have a sig on it".
I quite like signature guitars because even when it's just a strat, tele or whatever, there's usually something about it that Fender wouldn't have done otherwise. A new finish, a different type of bridge, maybe binding on a guitar that wouldn't normally have it. An extra option in a field of RI guitars made in black sunburst and red is never a bad thing.
I also like something about the idea of someone using a sig guitar for a style of music completely different from that of the musician who inspired or spec'd it. It's sort of the extreme version of using a genre-specific guitar for a different genre. Like playing country on a BC rich. There's something nice in the kinship it implies. 'Our music is completely different but we both have the same taste in guitar specs'.
They get a bit sad when there are several different relic'ing options for an SRV strat and that sort of thing. You can almost smell the rotting dead horse the R&D department keep beating.

Fender's R&D in general is just plain uninspired. They haven't tried anything new in years (for fear of losing money, i suppose) while jacking their prices up about 150-200 bucks in the last few years.
Fender, like the Rock Hall of Fame are late to any party, show up drunk, grab-ass the host, get beat up in the parking lot, and then shit in the squad car. Or maybe that's Sloan.
Sigs are made to sell guitars. They are not doing anyone any technological favors by making certain sounds available. It's as old as cereal to throw something in the box to get some kid to buy it. If you like Elvis Costello, SRV, Mascis, you may buy it regardless of what anyone thinks, and for all you know it may become collectible sometime down the road. Joe Strummer deserved a guitar because he died too soon, but it should have come in the 80s when The Clash were The Clash. If you didn't have to frequent New Wave nights held once a week in a sports bar, risking being run over by rednecks, you may not get the weird artistic bent of all those bands, but they took music places it really needed to go.
Do any of them rate a sig model? I wouldn't mind seeing a Tina Weymouth or Mike Watt bass. The danger is choosing someone for popularity over what lasting impact they have had. Johnny Marr made a lot of us think about how cool the guitar could sound, made maudlin danceable, and smuggled in shots of rockabilly. But these are no lasting Les Pauls or Chet Atkins, they are flavors of the month long after the fact. Why not a Cramps offering? Let the fans decide.
I do enjoy the Smiths, but am not really much for any of the newer stuff Marr has worked on. Then again, its not like I have heard much of The The, so take this with a grain of salt.
To me, this makes a lot of sense as a signature. People may not really be familliar with Marr's name, but I know a TON of people that are heavily influenced / in love with that band, and they do have a definite legacy. And this is coming from someone in Canada! Not to mention Modest Mouse has a pretty gigantic following, and I'm sure a good chunk of them are guitar playing music nerds as well.
Really, until fender can somehow give him a signature Ric 330, or release a signature Morrissey mic, or signature boquet of flowers to swing around your head then this is the best they have to offer.
At least this is a signature Jag, which as far as I can recall they haven't really done yet. It also has a different configuration and color scheme than the stock models offer. However, really I must admit I kind of wish they just did a four way toggle switch and maintained the conventional switch plate size.
