I think the console is a fun idea, I am too new to pedals to consider buying a NES of effects just yet.

by bands, i meant in terms of guitar - drums - bass - vocals. *shudders* rock quartets, and the like.

i listen to some pretty fucking far out shit, but a lot of it is done by folks with samplers and oscillation equipment.

i find animal collective to be annoying, and i have to assume it's an emporer's new clothes sort of relationship. they like it because it's cool to like them. i'm sure that's not the case, but i've found no endearing qualities with the shite that i've heard.

BSS is very traditional sounding to me, that may be because I got into music by listening to YFORGOTITINPEOPLE as handed down by my sister.
Maybe I do not know early stuff? I dunnoz. Mars Volta are for sure hard to bite as musical when compared to traditional stuff.

I'm not a big fan of much of their new stuff, I wouldn't say it's not musical though. but yeah, cut copy are better. good animal collective album = sung tongs. here check out this song:

quite musical I would say! they have a strong use of rhythm and vocal harmonies. I suppose this is where the beach boys reference comes from. although comparing every group with vocal harmonies to the beach boys is a bit like comparing every band with distortion and feedback to the jesus and mary chain. and incidentally I think jesus and mary chain sound more like the beach boys than animal collective. similar rhythm parts and vocal melodies. animal collective's rhythm parts (primarily composed of chopped up samples) and melodies(often are more like vocal arpeggios) are not very much like the beach boys.

Doesn't work for me, either, and I like it as weird as it comes - too much of a disconnect between the melody and (lack of) rhythm - too fucking white for me. But oddly, I love the Panda Bear records.

Its not me i'd be worried about. When you play on a stage the size of a postal stamp (a lot of UK venues/pubs) loaded with drinks and divs jumping about shit happens.
We had one gig video recorded and my Phaser kept going on and off on this particular song, i could'nt figure out why until i realised this lad had decided to pogo on it

see, this is where i have to draw the line. that song is the very last song that an animal collective fan (and a normally trusted musical associate of mine) played for me, and i believe i equated it to what i imagine a lobotomy feels like. it simply isn't musical. it sounds as if someone has found an old recording of wizard of oz or little red riding hood on vinyl, and is slightly touching the platter, slowing the record down and warping the already obselete sound, creating a new, unnecessary sound in the process.

See, I'd call "bullshit" on that statement- it's plenty musical. If you took away a bit of the percussion and vocals, it's just a few simple chords and melodies with some slightly offbeat timings and accents, and a section in 5/8 timing. All perfectly musical, plenty of stranger things have been done in classical music over the years.

I can appreciate it's a "taste" thing, and I won't tell you YR WRONG N IM RIGHT, but it's certainly not without merit and invention. I tried and failed to get into Merriweather Post Pavillion by Animal Collective, found it a bit too busy for me to really get a "hook" on it, but it's cool to hear.

Of course it's music. It;s organised. If I put the kettle on to listen to what sound it makes and then appreciate the form of that sound, then that's music. Dead simple, like. Music is just sound organised by human thought, either before the incident or afterwards. If I walk into a butchers and listen to someone chop a side of lamb and realise the form of the sound produced, that's music too.

There's not much that you can say isn't music. There's loads that I can say is.

i guess i was wanting someone to prove me wrong, that it is good music to listen to. show me what i've been missing. but it's not good music. it may be musical, in the sense of a butchers chop being musical, but alas, who the fuck wants to listen to that? whoever he is ain't playin' dj in my passenger seat, that's for god damn sure.

don't get me wrong. i love noise. i love offbeat, mismatched sampling, and fun thumpy beats behind it. but there has to be some soul behind the electrons, and i don't hear it with animal collective. i hear noise for noise sake.

Im agreeing with hotrod here on the animal collective thing. I don't see much to like in their music. I dug that Kid606 stuff tho.

I've noticed that a lot of new music seems to never get above a 4 star rating if we use that scale as an example. A lot of it is done, and if its done right. It has no feeling. Most of the new music i seem to dig is the electronic stuff. I could go for some chillwave and neon indian stuff. Animal Collective doesn't do much for me. I don't find their "music" very musical. They are what every other bland cliche indie pop sounds like, except maybe they do it best? Im not jabbing on people who dig em, but they don't have any appeal on my sector.
