Yeah, Jaco was an innovator; noodly, but musical... he knew what he was doin. Contrast him against someone like... Victor Wooten, who, despite being exceptionally skilled, is closer to Yngwie in terms of senseless noodlism.

Re: Playing Bass -
Yeah, slight changes in technique and tone can completely change the feel of a song, it's not always overt, but generally more subconscious. The listener doesn't realize the change, but they feel it.

Weeping, some people don't 'get' it on a musical level just as there's some music that you probably don't 'get' that other people think is great. That's life!! Don't take it personally! If you like Yngwie, and someone else doesn't then that's cool

People look at his playing in different ways. You and other people might say he's very quick which is impressive. Other people are impressed by innovation, and wrestling with the creative process, and aren't impressed by fretboard acrobatics and speed; Yngwie is not innovative at all to this extent, just quick and ultimately replaceable, which is what people are arguing. If you can't see and appreciate that then there's no point in even discussing or arguing with you.

Aye - why I stepped in quick as i don't think that argument, framed in a 'i'm right and you're wrong' way is going to be anything but nonsense and a waste of thread.

In fairness though and In terms of pure technique of the post Eddie Van Halen era of 'performance guitarists' he was very innovative but the wider question here depends on whether you much care about that innovation which is not very useful for all but certain genres of music.

Oh and Weeping: I'm not taking the mick out of his being fat. Fat does not = comedy.... BUT when you have the likes of Elvis or Yngwie who still cling to their increasingly anachronistic fashion and behaviours the extra girth can't help but add another layer to this. What I mean is that Yngwie looks like a caricature of himself when he was younger and is not growing old with grace and style and doesn't carry it off in a cool way anymore. Paul Gilbert is a good example of a man who still does what he loves and isn't afraid to lose his old image as he's grown out of it.

Please don't be offended, I just don't think you realise that sometimes you post in a way that comes across aggressive and blunt, and you need to learn when to take a step back and quit an argument, and not rise to it. These sort of arguments always perpetuate because there is no right or wrong answer: you can have high output pickups and enjoy shredding, or not, these are preferences not worth debating because there's no correct answer. What doesn't help is when you jump into a thread and say low output pickups are crap or we're all rubbish compared to Yngwie and should upload YouTube videos to prove our merit. People will always debate that sort of thing and as there's no correct answer it'll keep on going and going until you look silly. Live and let live.

I'm not here to argue with you now, just an observation of a fellow poster.

I've never played a Jaguar proper, but the Mustang I played was ace. Also the Vista Jagmaster neck is my favorite neck of all time, and that's just a Japanese Fender neck right? I think I'm gonna have to give my nod to the Jaguar based on neck and body shape. As said, sound is not the biggest issue with the ability to swap pickups.

True that. True that Malmsteen was very innovative as well. Neo Classical Metal/Rock was his thing yet people only seem to associate him with speed playing. All on a Strat, no Floyd Roses etc.

Gilbert comes across as humble and approachable, seems a top bloke.

P.S. The Les Paul should have been an option in this thread.

What always strikes me in those videos though is how utterly bored and almost superfluous the rest of the band appear to be. Check out the awesome playing of Malmsteen and his bored, less-talented (citation needed) and ultimately unimportant backing band! Malmsteen lays on the microtonal guitar shredding fireworks over a backing that could have been provided by tape and expertly turned up and down by a low-paid intern at the side of stage! "Ooh!" and "ahh!" at his almost magical ability to play many more notes than you in a shorter space of time and create what amounts to one 4 minute long solo with no lyrics, progression or depth!

I really tried to make an effort not to allow playing like that bother me a while back and appreciate it for what it was, but I think that effort consisted entirely of me ignoring that kind of musician actually existed, which is why I've ended up so horrified having actually checked some of it out again. What a waste of what seems like three thoroughly decent backing players. Even his use of delay at the end sounded amateur at best.

Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Steve Vai. Joe Satriani is my guitar idols. Would be nice to see some doing covers of their songs on a jaguar or a mustang or any other shortscale guitar!

I have all the G3 dvds. with malmsteen, vai. petrucci, johnson, satriani but they didnt make a dvd with the latest setup satriani, petrucci, gilbert?

I have owned both at the same time and liked both but I sold the Mustang. My Jag is probably the guitar I play most.
That said, I prefer my Jagstang to either!

Can anyone one vouch that the jag-stang's neck pickup tone is identical to the mustang's? I assume it is, I can't imagine the larger slab body of the JS making that much of a difference.

Not really. I think the stock routing is stupid. The bridge pup is routed backward! How annoying!

If anything, an HH route is an improvement.

Yngwie Malmsteen is embarrassing to listen to. He can play fast but has zero musical ability.

Paul Gilbert is everything that Yngwie wishes he was.
