just sand down the mounting ring that on the part that will be under the overhang..

at least.. thats how i would do it.

I'd go this route... or use a router to trim it back.

That's what I was thinking too but looking at the picture again perhaps you wouldn't be able to get enough space that way. You could do that and then find out how much overhang there is into the cavity of the mounting ring and sand the very edge of the fretboard off so that with the mounting ring but no pickup installed the edge of the fretboard and inner edge of the mounting ring are flush. That way you can remove as little fretboard material as is necessary.

awesome anyhow.

EDIT: no, i thought of "harm the omeless," which is not nearly as clever.

Given the relative tension mounting rings are put under by the springs, I'm thinking making it even thinner by sanding it down (if just on one side) might cause the thing to snap.

I know, it does seem a bit daft and destructive, sanding/filing down the underside of the fretboard, but it's such a small amount, I can't see it causing any problems. Other than the ballache of taking the guitar apart again.

Or for now just go "direct mount" into the body and forget about the plastic surround?

Not at all.
The board there is completely superflous; you could completely remove it (minus a couple mm to make sure the last fret stays) and it would make 0 difference to the guitar. I wouldn't worry about modifying it at all.

Well, 15 minutes of filing the back of the 24th fret made no difference (small files, I guesssssss), so I undercovered our landlord's junior hacksaw and HAD AT IT, mainly so I could finally put another pickup in..

Annoyingly, I went into the neck heel a little, but it can all be tidied up when I've got the proper tools at my disposal; either way, I've got a new humbucker and 3-way, woooooo. Forgotten how much I love neck humbuckers, especially when they're a little bright.

I was going to suggest you do just what you did. THen I thought, well probably only you and maybe JJlipton actually use the old #24. So I didn't comment.

It was kinda novel having 2 full octaves on a string, but definitely not a match for my patented Doog Impatience!

I was considering leaving it alone so I coudl sell on the neck when I pick up a Kramer stylee one, but what with the 2nd set of neck holes, I can't imagine too many people would be jumping to take it off my hands. SO FUCKITTTTTTTTTTTT :D

All in all, it's got me that extra bit closer to my hero!

I have a black feather if you want it?

Cool project, refreshing one for this neck of the woods too. 8)

Christ, didn't realise you were going to remove the fret, I thought you were going for the wood just beyond the fret.

I suppose 23 frets is still more than than 22.

This guitar looks cool.

Is it actually hard to find black feathers 'round your parts? I saw tonnes of rooks, jackdaws and ravens when I was in your country :P

Just a lil' opportunity to use the new handycam for some HD fun; here I am, sloppily shredding my way through the Simpsons theme tune with the BEAST.
