Quick update: I ordered the neck and the gold anodized jazzmaster pickguard. These two pieces will really help this project move quicker since I can double check my templates and fix any measurements before I make cuts. Hopefully they will get here soon.

I have an old $20 neck I am going to use to practice painting the matching headstock and the sparkle finish if that is the direction I choose to go in. I also have procurred some plans for a DIY paint booth I hope to construct.

I could really use an AVRI JM Tremolo if someone is selling one.

Still waiting on the bound neck, but the Gold anodized pickguard came in today. I was able to check my Jazzmaster template for accuracy. The thimble holes are a little off but everything else looks great. I need to sand the glue line and start tracing out the template.

Neck came in today. I took a chance on this neck because I had never bought from this seller, but these necks appear to be good Allparts alternatives. Neck feels a little chunky but I may sand it down a little. headstock looks to be the same size as my Jaguar.

Update: Lots of progress this weekend. I was able to pickup an orbital sander and electric screwdriver which proved very useful. I sanded down the guitar stock to remove the glue line. I got the template traced out and attached to the wood. Cut out the body and ran the router bit around it to smooth out the edges. Using the drill press and router, I routed 1.25" cavities for the circuits and the tremolo. I also traced out the pickguard and routes for the neck and pickups.

My next task is use a roundover bit to cut the corner on both sides of the body and then route the neck pocket and pickup routes.

Can someone confirm that the neck pocket and pickup routes are both 5/8" deep? I also need confirm that Fender used 7/16" round over bit on Jazzmasters. I have 3/8" and 1/2" bits, but no 7/16" bit.

I have my templates nearby where I marked the depths when I did my Jag (with JM pickups). I'm seeing 3/8" for the JM pickups and 9/16" for the neck. These are measurements that I found on OSG in the projects/library areas...though some of it was converted from mm to in and then rounded to the nearest logical fraction of an inch. I think 9/16" is the correct depth, I tried to double check all of that stuff before I put it on the templates.

I double checked the neck pocket on my finished guitar, and it is 9/16, I've had no problems with this guitars action. I'm running 2 of the thin carboard/paper shims that I pulled off of a couple strats. I have heard of people doing the neck pocket at 5/8" without issue as well though.

For the roundover fender does use 7/16", but they can be tough bits to find. I just used a 1/2" roundover on my Jag and it doesn't look too far off, where if you go with the 3/8" roundover it will look really squared off next to a real Fender.

I actually went to fairly reputable woodworking store and they didn't have 7/16" bits and don't ever sell them. I think I will give the 1/2" bit a whirl. I will double check the depth of my AVRI Jaguar and Telecaster. I definitely don't want it too deep. Thanks for the information and the advice. I always feel like I can learn more and it's great when people pass along their experiences.

I honestly wouldn't mind a Jaguar/JM Hybrid considering how much I love my Shortscales.

More progress on the body today.

1) Hand sanded the sides to level out areas.
2)I used a 1/2" roundover bit to remove the corners.
3) I routed the neck pocket and pickup routes.

I will need additional sanding to shape neck pocket and smooth out everything else. I am waiting for the thimbles before I drill the holes.

I will also need to start figuring out the tummy cut and arm contours. It's really exciting when you attach the neck for the first time and can sit with the guitar in your lap.

Shielding parts and AVRI trem came in today.

Lots of progress tonight. I basically finished both the tummy cut and arm contours on the Jazzmaster. I also thinned out the neck since it was a little too chunky for my taste. Feels pretty close now to what I am after.

After a lite sanding of the entire body, I went ahead and attached the neck. Feels really good to hold. I will need to tweek the arm contour a bit, but everything else seems smashing good.
