Not really related to this build, but I got a new router toy in the mail today. One of these. Two inch top pattern flush bit with 3 flutes (that is up in Zamfir territory) for under 17 bucks and free shipping off of amazon.
Thinking the triple blade will give a better cut with less tear out. Looks quality enough, but will give a better review once I try it out. The online reviews were good.

$17 ain't bad for a 1/2" shank, triple flute. I've been shopping all afternoon for a 45' bevel and a spiral downcut router bit. I forgot to check Amazon. I'm usually using routerbits.com or Grizzly.com (can order guitar pickguard material and other parts there also). I gotta buy another spray gun, since you turn me on to paintwithpearl.com, looking to shoot some flakes this month.

Skill actually has good bits and you can get a good deal on three bit variety packs at lowes. That is where I got my 45 deg pattern bit.

Let me know how the flakes go. I will probably have a bunch of the purple left over, so if you want a purple guitar let me know. I am probably going to mix it with clear glossy nail polish to test and then give it to my girls.

I picked up a Diablo 1/2" shank, 2" double edge for like $12 (normally $23+). Diablo round over 1/2" shank, 3/8" radius bit for $10 (normally $40). Diablo round over 1/2" shank, 1/2" radius bit for $10 (normally $40). A 8 piece Ryobi router bit set for $25 (normally $40). Check your local Home Depot, they are marking Diablo's down, super low... they are on the bottom shelf.

Fender radius is 7/16", you can find it at routerbits.com or grizzly.com, but 1/2" or 3/8" will work also.

Been searching for a second neck since I am making two of these. I already purchased a brand new squier cyclone neck (24.75") for $45 and I just got in the mail my first run vista jagmaster neck (24"). Scored this thing for $60 bucks the other day on e-bay. Came with the MIJ tuners. Good score, but may need some fixing because someone was doing stupid things to it as witnessed by last picture. But totally fixable if I need to. Someone put metal screw nuts in it while going through the delirium tremens it looks like. Why, I don't know. Hell, it might have been one of you guys for all I know.

On youtube, Ryan Martin uses something similar to that in his necks. He presses a metal washer fitting into the heel with a press. I don't understand why though..... I guess you don't have to worry about stripping the wood out ever

Someone rocked this neck. It has nice fretboard wear and It looks like it is off of a smashed on stage guitar. See where there is tear out that was patch fixed at all the original screw holes. I am going to try it out as is (will need some sanding and shaping) but I can always cut our the rot and patch. I have a nice piece of rock maple for this type of thing.

making a neck pocket template. will have to make two because each neck has a different heel shape.

here is what I did. two pieces of 3/8 cabinet ply, stacked and taped with carpet tape. made a center line and stuck the heel to the template blank with double stick tape. lined the neck with the center line. then taped some wood blocks to the to template down the length. and then made a series of 1 mm shims that i spot glued to each other and snugged up to heel. I let this dry for about 1/2 hour and taped to template.
Image
took shape of heel but pretty good.
Image
two pass route, first with blocks and second with blocks removed.
Image
pasted the inside withe jb weld and will sand nice and smooth when it dries. I was thinking my guide would not pick up the bumpies from the shim, but it did a little bit. not too bad, but I thought I would fill and smooth in case I want to keep the to use again.

those things are so much fun. yeah, sort of where I got the idea. at first I was trying to make a 2 inch kerf board but it was either too thick and would not make the bend or too thin and would snap.

I needed to make a different neck template for my Vista Jagmaster neck (first run 24"). As you can see it has a different heel shape and width that the squier cyclone neck.
Image
I learned from the last template so it went easier. First make center line on template board and also on back of neck. Then make 1 1/8" lines parallel to center line on template board for visual inspection of center. Put some double stick tape on back of neck heel and line up marks.

I routed my template same as before, but as you can see the heel pocket has a bit of a gap. Not bad, but instead of sanding it correct I went a different way. If I would have had a smaller radius template router bit it would have made the corner radius better and it would have fit perfect. But the 1/2" template bit could not make the tight corner. So the neck is pushed back in the template causing the gap.
Image
So here is what I did. I taped the bottom of the pocked of the template and wrapped in plastic wrap. Then wrapped the neck tight with plastic wrap too. Made a batch of five minute epoxy and squeegeed it into the gap. When the epoxy set in in about 10 minutes I took at all apart and it was a perfect mold. Will need to do some slight sanding to get the over goup off.

Haha! I totally was bidding on that jag neck against you and had the bid above you but said fuck it and I retracted it and bought a squier mustang neck for $40.00 more. Wasn't worth it to me. Lol. Glad someone here got it though.

Too funny. my ebay is jazzpig. I just put a max bid in and waited. I figured for $60 I couldn't go wrong even if I have to do some surgery on it. but i looks like all I am going to have to do is sand everything smooth and put a couple dollops of wood filler in a couple of spots. may just paint it glossy black for this build anyway.

Finished my neck routing jig for the vista 24" neck that will be paired with a jaguar bridge. Neck pocket and bridge thimble holes on the jig. Everything lines up perfectly and the neck fits in the pocket snug as a bug. Nut to bridge string alighment is perfect.

Decisions ........ decisions. One of the builds will be two buckers, jag bridge and bigsby like trem. The other build will be hardtail, three single coils (slanted like cyclone). I got two hardtail bridges and not sure whic one to use. One is a heavey trapazoid chromed bridge (leaning this way) and the other is a more standard brass/chrome bridge.

The standard one is more like this, but you can't really tell from the pic I took.
