If it doesn't darken it any I may use some stain but I'm worried about it going on even.

are you going to fill the grain? also, you might want to try pre stain conditioner. I used it on cherry wood before and that stuff is notorious for blotchy finish.

Not much of an update but I'm thinking I might go with a w/b/w pickguard instead.
I think it would give me more color options.

Black looks more classy but it's your guitar man. Black with a walnut or some other natural stain would be sweet.
