There's no reason why you couldn't play heavy music with a Mustang and the right amp or a boost pedal in line with a decent distortion pedal.

This guy plays a '78 Mustang (normally through a GK bass head)

i can think of one reason -- hard to play in drop D with shorter scale -- you would need very heavy strings

Um, not really. I play in drop D all the time with my Mustang and Jaguar. I use 11s (like most shortscale users) and they handle it fine. You could always slap a '12 E string on there if you experience any wobble.

My Jaguar should be turning up tomorrow... :)

Having fulfilled a long-time dream a few years back by catching a Mudhoney performance at a very small venue that I've also played, the last thing on my mind while being only several feet away from Steve Turner and one of his legendary Mustangs was, "With those awful low-output pickups, he has no business playing that guitar."

I play heavy stuff and I use a Mustang with a fast track 2 in bridge and a big muff thru a bass amp.

this is bollocks, unless you specifically mean 69RI pickups. even then, i've seen people use them to good effect.

the guy from holy mountain uses a mustang sometimes, and they're plenty heavy.

All my mustangs sounds fine after i changed the pickups it helped for me and thats not bollocks talk. I use my mustangs 100% after the pickup change. Before i was not playing mustangs at all because i didnt like the sound from them. I play most from rock, clean to metal and alternative and it sounds great for me.

But if you dont wanna listen, go ahead use your low output pickups i dont really care.

Are there no problems tuning a guitar with a floating trem down to D? It'd cause the other strings to go out of tune on my Jag-stang.

Ha that's my old Cimar mustang copy. Those pickups were weak as fuck, something like 3k each, but still sounded amazing when distorted.

Stewart locked my Mustang trem I think. I imagine if you want to tune down you would have to do the same.

If I hadn't suddenly decided I needed a Gretsch doublecut with Bigsby and a Dark Terror with matching Orange black 2x12 cab then I'd be all over the Jaguar. There had better be some Oly White ones left by Christmas.

*shakes fist at shortscale*

*expresses surprise offset guitars exists*

Why do we not have an "it's not fair" rolling around on the floor kicking your heels tantrum type smiley? This is the only way I think I can express my jealousy, and general dissatisfaction at not owning a Jag at the moment.
