jcyphe wrote:The whole concept of the thread is judgemental.

Who are you to determine what excess is? Where is the limit? Why do you get your rocks off determining who deserves to have stuff?

If it wasn't for hobbyist and collectors a lot of knowledge on any subject would never be preserved.

Like it or not guitars are pop-culture icons. THat's not because people are elevating them, that's because they changed history. If you look at the history of electric guitars you can easily learn about the history of America, you can see the shift in Europe from native styles to Rock and Roll just by looking at an old European guitar that basically looks like it should have been an accordian. Certain instruments are iconic, nobody has to elevate them, they're iconic because of how they were produced, the time they were produced, and the way they changed art forms and in turn world history. You must live under a rock or have a very limited world view, if you think anybody is trying really hard to make instruments iconic.

You're making too many assumptions and judgements. Sure empty consumerism and materialism is shallow, but how do you know that's happening with everybody that has multiple guitars?

Live by example, not buying being a judgemental douche. Also Josh Homme has a bunch of fucking guitars, and always has. From as long as I can remember going back to Kyuss, he's always had unique taste in gear, and it was always a quest of tone and also fashion to have something different than everybody else. So that's a stupid fucking example to bring up.
pretty much said it right here.

I have three Fender guitars all with single coils. They are all completely different.

did you sell your mustang?

am i in the loop?
I had to unfortunately. I loved it but when I finished the Duo-Sonic II project I realised I had two very similar guitars (I know you'll laugh at me for this, given your collection).
So when I decided I wanted to buy a Jaguar, something had to give. I got the Jaguar a week ago Monday and the Mustang went on ebay on Tuesday, sold on Sunday and was shipped out yesterday.

I'll miss it, I loved that guitar.

I'll let the thread die, but I just wanted everyone to know I wasn't trying to be a dick with what I said. I have no problems with other people owning a dozen guitars, half a dozen amps, etc. It's all up to you. If I had to do over again, I would have just went from the first guitar straight to the one I really wanted (AVRI Jazzmaster) and cut the intermediates (Am. Deluxe Strat, Mustang, Jaguar HH). Then again, maybe it just took me awhile to figure out what I really wanted.

I think my main point was really there's not enough time in the day to play the few guitars I already have.

And yes, Josh Homme has multiple guitars, but of those 3 Ovations in the early days, one was a backup and one was in an alternate tuning. And he's not exactly a gear snob, as he frequently plays Epiphone Dots in recent years -- he gets his tone regardless of which guitar he's playing.

Anyways, no further comments from me. You guys "won", whatever that means.

I thought backups were bad? Is that a valid excuse to own another instrument now?

Not much here that really needs said now.

^^Perhaps people wouldn't accuse shortscaler's of being so cliquish if you wouldn't blithely repeat each others' comments. If you had bothered to read what I had actually said in the thread, especially including the follow-up posts, you would see how unnecessary a lot of your comments are.

At the very least, this thread inspired more intelligent/interesting discourse than the alternative... You can all resume your commentary on some sort of random guitar you found on ebay.

(In case you can't tell, these posts are all meta-ironic... Just returning the attitude -- I think it was all in good fun until the saphead posted a picture of himself with my moniker on a 3M note)

Could you possibly be more conceited? Get over yourself.

If you don't like it here, then jog on - shortscale is anything but a forum where we just discuss "random guitars on ebay".

Meta-Ironic.

That's the "Jos Keeding" defence in internet speak.

No, it's the sign of a person with a poor mastery of words who lets this handicap impede thought process. It's a sign of the ambiguiation of language that is often made worse by mechanisms such as the use of classicised prefixes and suffixes in order to lend a terminological concreteness to meaningless writing. Often this is a sign that the author is having dificulty in working out exactly what they want to say, and as such is drawn to terms that either have no real meanging or have a meaning that is 'up for grabs.'

You could have just said "it's what cunts say".

Well, yeah, to that it pretty much summed up. NO WAIT, that's it paraphrased. Words with classical prefixes make uis all feel clever.

How does having alternative opinions to your own make me conceited? The thread title itself says "contentious". I think the internet high-fiving that you guys seem to enjoy doing is more conceited than any opinion I offered.

Because you walk around with your nose in the air dissing this forum because of our replies to a public post you made on this forum.

You're bizarre. If you didn't want our opinions, why make the thread here? If you don't like it here, why post here?

Sort your life out, listening to shite like Sonic Youth has ruined your brain.

I apologize for attacking the forum, that was not my intention. I appreciate the information and discussion, and believe it or not, the attitudes and personalities of the people on it. I -like- the fact you're willing to call me out when you find what I say dumb. I actually enjoyed the responses in this thread until it devolved into simple dismissals, eg: "This thread fucking sucks". I mean maybe it does, but come on at least put a little effort into it, ya know.

People thinking you making sweeping judgements of people who own more than one guitar is dumb is as valid as meta-irony.

You make a thread (knowingly titled Contentious) and then whine when (some) people dismiss your views as close-minded, snobby and arrogant?
What the fuck ever.
