well, I think that's cause without changing the op-amp a lot of the MIJ specs really don't sound very good on the newer DS-1s. the original MIJ didn't use LEDs for clipping diodes but it did have different diodes than the newer ones use. the LEDs were an easy way of getting a similar sound.

I'm inclined to think the op-amp doesn't really make that much of a difference in a circuit like this. It's just got too much gain, from the first transistor stage all the way through, and there's a lot of odd filter choices that just make it really shrill

hmmm... well, maybe you've seen this:
Build Your Own DS-1.pdf
he talks a little about the op-amp in there; "I found that, with the increased fidelity of the M5223AL and NJM3404AL
chips over the TA7136P chip, the distortion was a little bit fizzy with the DIST knob cranked for maximum gain."
