that's the thing you pay for. i borrowed a 66 refin mustang ages ago and it just had that smell. not damp, just old wood... shame it had to go back...Mike wrote:oh yeah - it smells old as hell also.

Yeah, the whole shop smelt the same, sort of an intoxicating mustiness. I can't believe I'm even mentioning it but it definitely gives you one of those "oh yes, this is a fucking guitar" moments when you pick it up and catch a whiff. I love the fact it's obviously been played to hell for a reason. I'm leary of completely clean examples from the 60s - what does that tell you about the instrument? Probably not what you want to hear. Either it's not great or it was owned by a dick.

the neck wear on it looks lurvely, that's what i like about 60s fenders, when they start wearing down like that.
and jags look better a bit bashed up anyway. given the choice i'd always opt for 'slightly distressed'.

My Vibrochamp stank of fucking Febreze for the first few weeks I had it. my mate has a 60s AC30 that smells a bit like fish when it gets hot.

My 90's Epi Sheraton was used in smokey Jazz clubs for 7 years before it got to me. a year on and it still smells like a cigar. <3

Just wondering, why wouldn't you be keeping the Classic Player and ditching the '66?
You can change pickups on the CP, if that's the issue, but I don't think you can as easily change the neck on the old guitar to have the flatter radius & bigger frets.
How's it bending strings & getting vibrato for playing leads on the '66, vs. the CP? Especially on the higher frets.
Does the tremelo bar on the '66 stay where you put it?
How much string buzz & sustain are you getting on the '66?
What do you see as the significant differences? Other than what can be resolved by a couple trivial hardware changes.
