Hmmm... I have no skillz. And very little money. Will bear these in mind though, cheers Rob.

I would be more than happy with Thom's sound. If I could have his amp and Strat I would be sorted for life and no pedals again

I reckon I'm near enough there with my sound... and the effects and guitars I use. At bedroom levels no, but when everything is cranked it just sounds better & better as all tube amps do.

Still finding it tricky to find the 2 levels of dirt that I'm after on top of my clean. I want to be able to switch between any combinations by one click of the swtich and this is proving a problem for me. clean amp / dirt- amp / ocd. Is this possible ?? Like some kind of foot switch ??

At home my clean is too clean (low volume) and whenever I add two dirts its far too muddy or I'm supplied with copious amounts of fuzz, which is something else completely and of which I'm happy to use & accept. I do feel though at rehearsal/gigging volumes I will have that break up that I'm after and 1 overdrive pedal will provide me with enough dirt for what I need.

My answer is probably a smaller tube amp like the HT-5 or somethin, or something with more grit like a Marshall compared with the classic 30 I'm using right now. I don't really wanna change wattage / size & weight of my current amp though, or spend a lot more money. The jcm800 40watt 1x12 combo seems to me the closest I can get, but it's just gonna be too loud and heavy. I wont go anywhere near the new Haze amps, i think the build quality is questionable from what I've seen already. I think Marshall need to build a basic 25-30 watt single channel valve combo, and they'll sell like hot cakes.

I'm an acoustic player at heart though and I'm currently getting kitted out with that... I have a Seymour Duncan woody on its way as we speak, so I can get out open mic'in once again. Hopefully that will sound decent.

OK I've just been monkeying around with my practise setup at home which is my Bugera V55HD into a 1x12" Harley Benton cab. I have my Dual Drive (OCD->DLS) on top which is my dirt sounds, and I recently dug out my Echo Base which was in the draw after being kicked off my board when I was using the Memory Boy as people wanted to know how it worked with the band.

Well fuck me. I know I built it, but this pedal is fucking awesome - it's going back on the board, and I'm building a new one with Benecol's up to date graphics which will eventually replace this. Love the Echo Base.

I feel comfortable with my tone, I hardly use effects, except for the occaisonal chorus or univibe, but I feel I can get a good sound just plugging into my 212R. The pickups on my Super Sonic are well suited for my style of playing, and when I play through the drive channel at decent volume and low gain, it gets me pretty close to a big 70s rock sound, which I love. I think the best part of my sound is difference between the neck pup and bridge. I can get a pretty thick, yet cleaned up sound from the neck, but when I switch to the bridge, I get teh rawk tonez. All and all, I'm pretty happy with my sound/tone.

I love the Echo Base. Some day. Although it'd be an extravagant thing to have.

A bunch of adjustments & experiments & discoveries have helped me get sounds I'm (more) consistently satisfied with....

-- Discovering the tone knob on my Fenders has made them whole new guitars.

-- Rewiring my Stratocaster to master vol + master tone + pickup blend knob has cured the love/hate thing I've had with Stratos for years. That'n sticking a base plate on the bridge pickup + the tone knob bit above.

-- The Ruetz mod overcame my boredom with my Rat pedal & the MBM Fuzz Face gives me an distorted sound I've always pictured but never had. Distortion's still a tough one from day to day, especially when recording. I go back & forth between about 5 different pedals, but the resurrected Rat & the Fuzz Face are at the top of the heap these days.

-- With Fender amps, discovering rolling off the top end @ high volume plus using the Bright switch instead of (rather than in addition to) a cranked Treble knob has made a difference. That'n discovering how much a difference in EQ there is between standing off-axis from the speaker vs. ears directly on-axis.

-- Biasing & otherwise tweaking power amps to add a touch of tube compression has made my amps way more fun to play through.

-- Rediscovering Fender amp vibrato or tremolo or whatever, especially subtle uses for it.

-- Experimenting with getting as many different tones as possible from my Musicmaster by playing in different places along a string (near neck heel, over pickup, etc.), using different pick materials & thicknesses, diff picking angles, fingerpicking, adjusting the tone knob or rolling off the Vol knob slightly & compensating with amp settings... there's a lot of different sounds lurking in a one-pickup guitar.

taylornutt wrote:I started out as a pure acoustic player, so it took me a while to find an acoustic tone I like. I eventually settle on Taylor guitars and just love how they make me sound.

The electric tone has been a little more complicated for me. Started out with a great guitar and amp. I am still in love with the amp(Marshall JTM 30 with 12" speaker), but I am about to sell the PRS because it just didn't suit me. I love how my amp has such a clean "Fender" tone but the dirt channel is all Marshall. I get the best of both worlds and it handles pedals great.

My pedals have slowly evolved over time as I have expanded my musical influences. Some effects, like delay, have taken longer to incorporate into my sound. I had a period where I was afraid to mess with my gear cause I was afraid I would mess it up or something. I definitely know what I like and my pedals work well together. I just need to clean up the rig and make it more portable

I am still working out the electric guitars. I am obviously still searching for the right mix and feel, but I finally feel I am getting closer. My custom Jagmaster that I built is my favorite and once I get a couple of issues fixed it will perfect. I have really loved my Squier Duo Sonic and it has really opened me up to new ideas. I hope that adding a Jaguar and maybe a Mustang and/or Baja Telecaster will round out my tone.

I don't have a signature tone yet, but I hope the new guitars will help me find my voice and that translates to cool music.
Updating my search for good tone.

I now have the Jaguar AVRI to replace the PRS. I couldn't be more thrilled. It has replaced the Jagmaster as the #1 electric guitar. The rhythm circuit can give me that fuzzy woman tone while the pickups in the lead circuit are clear and spunky. The "strangle" switch is so cool while I love both pickups and how both pickups together gives a nice glassy sound. I will be experimenting with strings until I find the right mix on both the Jaguar and my Duo Sonic (going back to .11s)

I am finally starting to clean up the pedals. I just got a used Pedaltrain pro off Craigslist. I plan to save up a little to get the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 to mount underneath the board to eliminate the ugly wall wort that is hidden under the third tier shelf of my existing pedalboard. I need to experiment with different layouts on the pedaltrain since I can route the cables below. I have a very clean signal chain and will keep the pedals in the same connection order, but move their board location. I need a new Overdrive pedal (sold my EHX Germanium OD) and I have already talked with Mike about building me something nice that incorporates the Salbooster and Saltbreaker together. I hope before Christmas but who knows. I may make a video of my pedalboard tear down-reassembling for Youtube. I also want to demo all my guitars once I get them dialed in. I hope to eventually demo my amp and pedals as well.

I am making slow progess but the adventure continues.

Yes, I'm very happy with my sound. Anything new I buy is just to collect or mess around with for fun and stuff.
