Thanks Haze - I'm going to keep an eye on how yours goes too. I am extremely jealous of your $50 neck score - that is an AMAZING deal! I just bought a second neck for my project, and I spent considerably more on it than you did... although I must say, it looks pretty sweet. I'll know for sure when it gets here in about a week or so... vintage '65 Mustang slab board in nearly perfect (9.5/10) condition.
Mike, as I mentioned in another thread, I'll be leaving those white covers on my pups - they're staggered magnet units, wound by Abagail. Color is going to be SFG with a white pickguard. Really the only thing I have left to worry about is going to be the refinishing... and I'm really nervous about that.

Fair enough, I do love the solid cover aesthetic but I can totally understand in this case why you would want to leave the pickups as they are. How did you come across them, did your mate at Fender palm them for you haha?
I'm guessing if you're worried about the finish that getting your bud in the Custom Shop to help you isn't on the cards without big bucks?
From my experience you will be just fine as long as you do all the prep work right in the first place. Much like recording (at which you need no advice), if you get the early stages right (mic placement, tracking, the performance vs. sanding, sealing, cleaning/dusting) then the following stages (the mix, the master vs paint, lacquer, buff) will go much, much smoother.

i'd be extremely careful routing the body if i were you (if i ever get time to get to the post office that is)- it had already been hacked up for a bridge pickup and i filled the hole with a 2 part epoxy filler, which is fine when it comes to sanding or drilling but might start chipping if you take a router to it. it might be a bit of a messy result.

definitely worth considering... maybe i will be shipping back the bronco guard......... No real hurry on your half, my bridge was delayed and possibly the pickguard as well

Yikes - I forgot about the body issue. My 60's MM's already have the bridge routing in place.

Well, I'd rather have lacquer, which they can do in Corona, but I have not even asked about what that would cost. I actually have two friends I play with, and a couple of other guys I know who work at the CS, and it's not like I'm completely "unknown" in the industry, so I'm fortunate in that it can open doors for me and give me access to stuff that not everyone has. For example, the routing didn't cost me a dime. Then again, Fender did get quite a bit of "press" via the pics I took while on my factory tour and put up on HC. I have even heard some of them made appearances over here.
On the body / refinish, one thing I've considered is just getting a can of Reranch SFG and one of primer, leaving it essentially "as is", squirting it with primer, then doing the SFG over any existing dings and dents (there aren't that many of them) - I really am not into "relicing", although I've been taught a few of the tricks of that... but OTOH, I kind of like the idea of leaving some of the "honest" battle scars and history of the guitar intact. I know that sounds weird...
I could just hand it off to Dennis to refinish, or someone else, and I may still decide to do that. Or I may decide to attempt to do a first rate job myself - I just don't know yet.

My understanding is that from 64 to 69, the bodies for Musicmasters, Duo Sonics and even Mustangs were the same under the pickguards - they were all routed for switches and dual pickups - the only differences being the extra routing the Mustangs got for the trem springs. Sometime shortly after the DS was discontinued in '69, Fender stopped routing for the second pup on the MM, which is why I had to have them route it for that on my '75 MM.

The correct pickguard and bridge came in today. Everything looked in good order at first glance but i didn't have time to examine everything or take pictures yet. My girlfriend was in a car wreck the other day so i have had very little free time to myself lately but she's feeling better so tonight i'll have a chance to get pictures and upload them. He was kind enough to send me the mounting screws which they usually don't do and sell separate.
