It's a mid-1970s Fender Musicmaster Bass, refinished in Lake Placid Blue, and the neck is a Squier neck. I never liked the original neck so I sold it and it more than paid for the new neck.

anybody played on yet? my friend just got the regular scale squier jag bass and it is very cool. sounds great. plays well. a little light. some really dumb active "bass boost" going on, but whatever. i want the short scale!

I saw that the Candy Apples are in stock on MF now. If I hadn't just bought a Deluxe Strat, I would have.

The GC by me has two of the non short scale ones with PJ pups and two of the humbucker'd ones in. They seem really well built and pretty nice for the price. I had a bit of time between lessons to kill so I went in there and played them. I played them through the new Ampeg Portaflex 500 head and 210 cab which I was also excited to try out. For some reason the -15db active pad kept clicking off and sounding like these basses were going to blow the speakers. So I tried the head through an 810 and the same thing was happening. I'm pretty sure this problem was with the wiring of the active pad on the amp and not a problem with the basses. I didn't get to play them long enough to know whether or not I liked them because of this though. But they felt really nice, especially for the price! The frets were more well dressed, and not sharp and stabby like the ones on the new vintage modified jags and jazzies. It had a satin finish neck so some people here won't like them, but it felt nice to me. The red PJ jag was about twice as heavy as the black PJ jag for some reason, so I'm sure there's going to be wild variances between each individual bass, but that's what I expect at this price range honestly.

I did try that head out through the 810 with a regular american P bass and I loved it! Only $399, 500 watts, and it only weighs 11 pounds!!! I'm seriously considering getting one because I'm tired as hell of lugging my 100 lb SVT 2 pro head around all the time. It sounds awesome too, before playing that I was exclusively considering the Orange Terror Bass as a lightweight option, but this thing honestly comes pretty close to the same territory as that amp! It doesn't get as gritty and gainy, it's a bit more smoothed out, but the gain knob on this amp does give it some really nice rock tone. And it has the same mid-range frequency shift that my SVT has that I love. The only thing I'm worried about is the overall reliability because it's a brand new model, only been out for a month or so, and the active pad was already messed up on the one that I played. I don't play active basses anymore since selling my stingray so I wouldn't need that, but if that broke on this amp, I'd be worried about how the rest holds up in the long term.

You ever consider a MicroVR? It has a very SVT sound, sounds quite big for the size, and is feather light. People on TalkBass rave about it, I'm sure you've seen.

I really was interested in those and I really wanted to like them but I've seen more than a few in GC that have been falling apart, knobs and input jacks falling into the chassis. One even had the entire control panel falling into the chassis. They don't seem like they would be durable enough for gigging to me. I trust myself to take care of any of my gear, but when playing with a band and everyone in the band and sometimes people not in the band will just grab your shit to take it off stage and speed up loading time between bands' sets, stuff gets beat up, so I need something durable. Plus 200 watts solid state just isn't enough for me, especially being used to my 300 watt tube SVT. If I got anything else it would probably be the SVT-350 or 450 and just run my sansamp in to bypass the preamp. I have a few friends that do this and their tone pretty much matches my all tube SVT!

Fair enough. I would really love to have a decent power amp that doesn't weigh a ton, that way I could just plug in my SansAmp, as you just described, and then run my two 2x10" cabs through it.

Check out the SVT 350 or 450 for that, they sound awesome with the sansamp running in through the power amp input so it bypasses the preamp on the amp. If I find one cheap enough I'm definitely considering that.

A bit big for my tastes. Keep in mind, I want to use it on top of two vertically stacked SVT210AV cabs, which are only a foot wide. I'm probably just going to get an Orange Bass Terror at some point, since it's the perfect size. 500 watts and tube preamp? Yes please.
