I don't think you'd be able to tell the difference between two electric solidbody guitars that are identical in every way but the body wood without knowing ahead of time that one was basswood. You'll say you could, but, I'd need evidence to prove it ;)
I have the power of TOUCH and am able to detect approximate DENSITY with my SENSES. Then I hear it's CRUNCHYTONEZ with my HEARING. Like a superhero.

My primary issue with basswood is that I don't like the sound of it, the feel and ding-attraction are secondary. Pine sounds and feels nicer than basswood to me, so I can forgive its softness. And it's the construction (semi-hollow) more than the wood that gives Dano's their signature sound.

I can appreciate I'm setting myself up for switchtips-style ridicule here.
I'm curious. What basswood guitars have you had and what pickups do you have/had in them?

I had an Eastwood Ramones sidejack with Mosrite-style P90 things. I didn't have any more because I didn't like the wood.

Well, the physical properties of wood, you can tell from one guitar, but the tone of it? There's no way you heard the sound of basswood from one guitar that you had stock weird pickups in. Ever had a basswood Strat? Ever had an alder Strat? I have, and I couldn't tell the difference between the two if my life depended on it.

Don't you use a modelling tranny amp ? Everything sounds the same on them.

I am aware that guitars can be different from one another, and while I haven't owned many basswood guitars, I've played quite a few. They're not all bad by any means, but I don't want one thank you. I would not stand in the way of anyone else having a good time with one. I am mildly disappointed, purely for selfish reasons, that Squier have done a version of one of my favourite guitars in a material I strongly dislike is all.

Actually, I have no modeling amps at this time.

I don't have any tube amps right now, though. I always end up selling them whenever I buy them.

I figured. But basswood cabinet sounds like a bad idea. Maybe with a maple cap, though, that would bring out some better toanz.

I would build a Squier Shrine if that happened.

The only guitar Squier needs to release is a CV Duo II in olympic white. I'll take a Stang as consolation prize.

Saw a real '70s blackout strat in the shop the other day, next to an early '59. One thing that struck me as I looked at both of them was the drastic difference in the forearm contours.
