getting a surf green jag in at the local shop to try, will be a likely candidate for the maple stang neck

I played a surf green Jag at one of the local shops today. Action was a bit high, but it was otherwise very, very nice. If I was in the market for a Jag, I'd pick one up post-haste. It really excelled at surf tones with the bridge pickup and some reverb... all of a sudden I felt like I was in The Ventures.

Nobody seems to have any new VM Jazzmasters locally yet. Can't wait to try one out.

What shop were you at? Haight Ashbury beat everyone.

Gelb Music in Redwood City. Haven't made it to Haight or SF Guitar Center yet... fucking traffic doesn't exactly excite me very much. The only reason I went to Gelb was because they told me they also had a new VM Squier Jazzmaster, but of course it was one of the older models with the maple neck and hardtail. If I had known the guy who answered the phone didn't know what the hell he was talking about I wouldn't have even bothered.

went to a GC yesterday and they havent got any of the new squier in yet.

Oly White. That would be rad, thanks! Although I'm kind of into the idea of getting one shipped so I can be the first person outside of the factory to play it. Never been the original owner of a guitar before.

Friday the 13th is unlucky?

I went ahead and special ordered the Squier Jaguar July 5th from Guitar Center (Highland park, IL). Sure, I've seen they're online, some eBay, some Sam Ash. But there's always the case of sales people having "model mix up".

I thought it was to arrive next week, but it was in on friday. $299 and the $25 Squier rebate, $274.. plus shipping/tax -and yes i know shipping is often free, but the $12 was cheap insurance for chasing around and encountering frustration with mix/up, etc.

I pulled it straight out of the box, needed to borrow a box cutter and all. It was like "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..." and angels sang. A couple sales guys took pics because they had heard about them, but hadn't seen one.

I plugged it into a basic Fender amp.. it was for the most part in tune right out.. A quick tune and i was off and running. Absolutley no intonation problems, buzzing or anything. Neck was pefect and straight, reminds me a bit like my 83 Squier Strat. you always have to wait a few days for the neck to stabilize and this still hasn't budged. Rock solid. Trem bar locks and stays where you let go of it. My 93 Bass VI reissue goes all over.

Pickups are completely quiet even under flourescent lights. nice balance in the pot selection/caps with the rhythm and lead circuits.. seems you can dial in about everything. No problems with the strings popping out or anything, rough chords or heavy twanging. I adjusted the high E a little, then i just went ahead and put a drop of elmers glue to each set screw. Checked the radius and plays even better.. dang.. haven't even put on the new strings yet.

ANYWAY... I went with Olympic white and tortise. now then. i have never owned a vintage (or reissue) Jag so i cannot compare the build or sound to this. But i think that that is ok. I'm not looking or expecting it to be just like one. how does this stand on it's own?

form, fit, finish: Great tint on the neck, looks vintage. Not that satin, but not high gloss.. It nears slim profile, not clubby or round. Frets, very well dressed, no buzzes, no high spots. The nut looks weird, not sure the material, but it's accurate and solid. Neck pocket, nice and snug, fits like it should.

Body, flawless. whiter than white, no ripples, orange peel, sanding swirl, nothing. All screws fully seated and square.

Pickguard is tortise/white/black. the chrome control plates are pretty nice fitting to the pickguard.

Switches and controls, solid. no wiggling lihe the ones on my early 90s Bass VI reissue. Very smooth, knobs all aligned, etc

Tremolo nice and floaty. better than the bigsby on the tele. this is light nd wispy with lots of response. The bridge rocks nicely, no strings popping out. The bridge seems too low to slip a mute under there. it's really/close to the pickguard.

Sound -tons of tones. This is still in the early stages of discovery and i haven't put it thru it's complete paces. The pickups are balanced, very strong. the rhythm circuit, full bodied. The regular circuit, same thing. pickups are clean and powerful, strangle switch adds a nice notch to the sound. i can see getting a lot of great sounds out of this.

I think the Seafoam Green is absolutely stunning. What a good idea, Squier!
