Surely they're ukes, not mandolins? Only 4 strings.

i've seen mandocasters with 4 strings and 8. i think you're loosing some of the sound of a mando in loosing those extra 4 strings, but to each their own.

plus with 8 tuners you'd have to have a 4 a side headstock or a HUGE 8 in line stock, not good for the fender lookz.

i think the mando would look cool with a mini paddle, like the old villagers and stuff.

I don't just mean that, I mean the whole concept of a "mando-caster" being wrong. Are ukelelis tuned the same as mandolins?

im not sure what ukes are tuned to but i do know that mandos are traditionally tuned g,d,a,e, basically backwards from a guitar.

Like a viomalin. It just seems silly that it's getting called a mandocaster when it's only got four strings.

lets go dig up leo fender and tell him what a bad job he did.
it is kinda silly becuz it is almost a new take on an old instrument.

mandos are tuned GDAE, they usually have 8 steel strings.
ukes are tuned GCAE (i think) and usually have 4 nylon strings.

how can the concept of a mando-caster be wrong? a mandolin's defining feature isn't the fact it has 4 courses of 2 strings.

i expect an electric mandolin is geared more towards doing single note stuff rather than rhythm, 4 strings will make that quite a bit easier.

You do get electric 8 string mandolins. Surely it's not a proper mandolin though if it's got 4 strings, and no I don't think that's the same as a 12 string guitar etc. I don't know, I'm just cross 'cause I'm stuck on some work and it's being projected onto the idea of a 4 string mandolin, which I do actually think would sound shite compared to an 8 string.

it would sound a bit shite, but it's still a mandolin.

i guess you could also argue that a 12 string or 7 string guitar is not a real guitar, or a proper guitar.
same with basses.

The tuning is still mandolin. It's an unmistakable sound. I am hoping that with the right strings, I can get the best of both worlds, because I will have the mandolin sound, yet be able to bend strings and add guitar effects. I have played mandolin for decades and have pined for one since the first time I saw it. I couldn't beat the price I got it for. There used to be a $100 mini Tele kit you could get online, but they stopped making it. If I had the thing wired and ready I could make a better pitch for it. I don't know why I find it impossible to ever record any demos.
