My tips from a 2-3 year bass player
1. Folk/theme songs (look in misc theme unknown or unsigned on your favourite tab source)
2. hammer on every note on evey song (improves strength)
3 Fasttracks method books- realy help and come with a cd and a jam section. In the jam section you have 5 (?) songs that are the sae on all books so that if you have a friend that buys one (piano drum bass or guitar) you can jam together.
4 Buy a big muff
5 Record a little bit, Even if it is only your laptops line in into audacity it will allow you to listen to yourself (send a cd home for an easy christmass gift )
6 Find some people to jam and discuss (shortscale is a start for tips but you need some rl people)
7 A multipedal has tonnes of effect to keep you busy (this seems like a buy this and you will get better tip but it is not my first pedal was a $50 korg and I loved it!)
What's the best practice method?
