i hate the snow. its supposed to snow all weekend, AND its preventing all of us from seeing the end result of this awsome project!

good work so far man cant wait to see the finished project.

Some general construction questions:
-Should I force the bridge thimbles in before or after painting the body? And if after, should the holes be covered to prevent paint going in them?
-The body does not have neck plate holes yet. What is the best way to align the neck such that the new holes would line up with the priorly drilled ones? Or am going to have to resort to doweling the old holes in the neck and/or letting a 'pro' do this part?
-I may have to do a little bit of additional routing to get full-depth pickups to fit. What is the ideal bit for a router to work on Alder?
-Can anyone tell me the exact, nitty-gritty process of painting a guitar body? Ie: how many coats, how to sand in-between coats, etc. I am not expecting a 100% perfect finish, but something decent would be nice.

there's a walk through type thing on reranch.com that tells you exactly what to do, i certainly found it helpful.

after and i would cover the holes to prevent excess paint buildup; could lead to install issues. if you stuff a dowel through until paint dries, then make sure you cut around it before you remove. when the ferrule goes in, it should cover up most minor blems around the top.

i took mine to a pro because i kept doubting myself. it got done right, and didn't cost me much. the best news is i didn't fuck up the neck just to say i'd installed it myself (which would've inevitably happened).

you should check out rodvonbons posts about painting (pats compstang, swinger refin, etc)

i agree i am a huge fan of Bilinda's guitars. this is a great thread!

I am currently in the painting phase... Got my first coat of primer on. Need to sand it flat and then decide if I want more primer on it or just go into the blue paint.

I'll keep yalls updated.

ok, started on the back first. figured if i mess up it's not as big of a deal. once i get the front and back done, i'll get it smooth with sand/steel wool and do another coat or two.

i think i might do it inside from now on, outside there is a risk of debris getting in the coat...





Also I'm fully aware I'm not going to get a professional, perfect mirror finish in every part of it, and I'm fine with that. I didn't invest too much money into this project and the 'DIY-ness' of it will be kinda charming once it's done.

looking pretty good so far! i like the clumbsy diy-ness in project guitars, it makes them have CHARACTER. the finish on my telecaster that i did wasnt perfect but i did it with my own hands and i enjoy it more and thus it gets played more!

Gonna let it dry overnight, sand it a bit, and go for another coat. The pictures don't show the imperfections too much, which is good, but closer inspection reveals a bunch. Ah well...

Not sure if I really like the color. Seems a bit dark in person. I'll have to see how it turns out with the hardware before I decide whether to keep it or not.

dude, those contours are sharp... by sharp i mean not smooth. is that how you wanted them? i'm thinkin i would've finished them down a bit.

i think it must be the lighting, the contours seem pretty soft in person to me. but then again i didnt really have a reference point when i was sanding it

well, mustang contours are pretty much the same as all fender contours. it's like the surface of the body curves off. this is like a break angle with the edge sanded off a bit.

just FYI I guess. it's your guitar, you can certainly build it however you like.
